Hi all, I’m nearly half way through my chemo and have been cold capping so still have some hair. I was told to use simple shampoo and conditioner which I have been. However, I’ve found the conditioner doesn’t really condition and I’m having to comb out the knots after!

can anyone recommend a conditioner that I can safely use that actually works?! I’ve searched the forums and Google and not had much luck!

thank you!

  • Hi, I just used my normal conditioner through cold capping, making sure it stayed away from my scalp. I would say though if you have a usual conditioner that you like, don’t use it. I’ve had to stop using mine now as the smell is so triggering and every time I wash my hair, bang, I’m back to how I felt when I was having chemo!

  • hi   that’s really interesting as I was told I couldn’t use normal conditioner. But a great tip about not using my fave, thank you!

  • Hi, when I cold capped they would put simple conditioner on it was good. It’s important to have a good shampoo and conditioner as your hair becomes quite brittle.

I couldn’t face my last cold cap as it started to make me feel very sick - unfortunately what hair I had managed to hold on to then fell out, so it does work if you can endure it Blush

  • Thanks   I use the simple for the cold cap but don’t find it very good for when I wash my hair! I’ll keep searching for alternatives! I’m on my 4th now & so far I’ve managed to cope with it.

  • Have you tried the faith in nature unscented one from Holland and Barrett - it can be ordered  online. It has no nasties too. The problem is that the hair doesnt produce natural oils on chemo so it has a tendency to tangle up more. Have you tried wearing a silk headcap at night to avoid the overnight tangles? Or using a silk pillowcase if you cant bear the cap?

  • A silk pillow case is a great suggestion. Not only did it help my hair stop tangling but I actually think my wrinkles improved!

  • I have finished chemo - if it helps with wrinkles then I am definitely getting one !!!

  • Sadly didn’t do anything for my frown lines that have become so deep after 9 months of worry and treatment! They say chemo biologically ages you by 10 years, I think that’s a massive underestimate Laughing

  • Hi  Oh I will have a look at that, thank you! I did wear a cap at night so I don’t wake up with a pillow full of hair but it’s no silk. My hair is very dry now so might get the silk pillow!

  • Anything to help with the wrinkles is worth it!
