Armpit pain/swelling

Hi,

Hope everyone is well.  I am new to the group and thought it best to ask people who are going through this themselves for their experience and advice.

I had a Mastectomy and immediate reconstruction in August - they also took 4 nodes.

The results came back showing a tiny trace of cancer in one of these nodes and two weeks ago I had to go back for a full Axilla Node clearance - which was a joyful experience.  I am still awaiting the results to find out what the next stage is, but in the meantime, I wondered if anyone else can describe their recovery in this area.....

After a week, the incision in my armpit swelled dramatically and fluid started seeping out of the stitches.  My MacMillan nurse was lovely and not overly worried and said better to seep naturally than have to put in a needle to drain near where the new implant was.  I was put on antibiotics for 10 days.

Today is week 3 since the op and it is still swollen, not to the same extent, but the problem seems to be that due to having to wear a bra day and night to support the implant it 'feels' like it is chaffing and causing the stitches to heal slower - although no seeping, there is still a tiny trace of weeping at the end of the day.

Am I being impatient and just need to chill out and accept that two operations back to back will take time??  what are others experience of this operation.

Thanks in advance xxxxx

  • Hi  sorry to hear your wound recovery is still troubling you. I don't have this experience myself,  but I noticed you've not had any replies yet, as the site is quite busy. My response will bump you back up to the top of the page and hopefully one of the lovely people on the group with the right experience will be along soon. Best wishes

  • Hi

so I am 8 weeks post mastectomy (double) with lymph node biopsy. My wound is just under the breasts but I did have a bit of seepage at around 5 weeks post surgery. Just thinking if it’s the bra that’s bothering you maybe using some gauze to buffer between your bra and skin? I also found my post op bra sat right on my wound. Everytime it would dry up the bra would pull the scab off and start it weeping again so I started putting a little Vaseline over that area and it healed up within days. Any concern about your wound at all get in touch with your breast care nurse or your practice nurse and get them to cast an eye and help care for your wound. I hope this is helpful even a bit!

  • I had mastectomy with implant 7 weeks ago and was advised at 4 weeks post op that I no longer has to wear bra 24/7. I know all surgeons advise something slightly different by it may be a question worth asking if you think that is irritating the area.  Hope it feels better soon x
