Pain after surgery

I am still in pain under my arm and across my breast where I recently had surgery to remove a tumour and 3 lymph nodes.  This was just last month. Is there anything I can put on it to ease the pain? When it is cold the area 'stings' as well.

  • Hi GeriB welcome tp the forum and I am so sorry to hear about how painful things are for you. 4 weeks believe it or not is not a long time and Im  not surprised that you are still in pain. I wouldnt be wanting to put anything on it as such but are you managing wearing the bra day and night? I found that helped to support the breast after surgery for about 6 weeks.

It will setlle down but it  will take some time for you to heal outside and inside so you may experience pain for  a while yet and they recommend that you take paracetamol as required to help with the pain.

They’re pretty violent with our bodies under anaesthetic!! I used a hot water bottle full of cold water when the swelling and pain got too much x

  • As already has been said 4 weeks is not a long time. My operation was different and so it is difficult to comment. I find wearing a good support bras night and day essential in the early weeks.  Minimum of 6 to 8 weeks. I also massaged my breasts with E45.  I had specific exercise related to my operation which helped to improve my shoulder movements. My BCN was good and happy to discuss any niggles I had. Good luck and take care.

  • I found the lymph node site more painful than the lumpectomy site but paracetamol helped.  I was given a small heart shaped cushion in hospital made by a previous patient that tucked under my arm to relieve the pressure and this really helped, especially at night.  Hopefully the pain will settle down over the next few weeks for you.
