Vaccines (Covid & Flu) while on chemo & MABs

Hello

Just wondering about the timing of vaccines really.

I had 4 cycles of EC Chemo in July to end August, and am now between cycles 1 and 2 of Paclitaxel and Phesgo. Day 8 of Pacli cycle 1 was cancelled due to low WBC e.g. neutrophils at 0.6, but Day 15 went ahead on Friday following 3 more days of Filgrastim (which I had had for 7 days after each cycle of EC chemo).

I would appreciate advice regarding the best time to book in for my (1) Covid and (2) Flu vaccines.

I am asthmatic, so was always offered the flu jab anyway, but with the immune suppression that comes with chemo I'm not sure when to go ahead this year.

Thanks for your advice!

  • Hi

The best people to ask would be your chemotherapy nurses. When I had my Paclitaxel last week I asked when would it be best to have my covid booster and they said the day before I have my chemo. I'll be asking them this week about the flu jab.

  • Thanks, that is very helpful

I have now booked my Covid vaccine for 20 October, the day before a Pacli day (not before a double Pacli + Phesgo).

  • As I said check with your own team that it's okay to go as you're on different treatment to me and your team's advice might not be the same!

  • I will. I asked them before I started chemo and they said get it done now, so I had Covid vaccine no 4 on 1 July.

I will ask the registrar on Thursday about both vaccines now I'm on Pacli and Phesgo.

I do think they like (most) chemo people to get these vaccines though, as far as I can tell. I'm prone to lung infections due to asthma, so my respiratory consultant will definitely want me to get the flu one.
