Hello I wondered if I could have some advice as I am driving myself nuts with worry.  A few months ago I found a lump in my breast. I had a mamagram and a scan and was seen by a specialist. Was told the lump was nothing to worry about and just cystic tissue. Now every single month at least a week before my period the lump hurts and aches....and I have noticed does subside once I bleed. I'm worried that it's only one breast and also worried it's more than just cystic tissue? I have booked an appointment with the GP but just wondered what the problem could be as I'm worrying all over again :0(

  • Hi.  If it was me to put your mind at ease I would want referred back for another chat with the specialist.  Even a phone call appointment would help you.  I dont know about your set up but in our breast clinic you can walk in and speak to a breast care nurse.  That might also help you as they are very experienced and might just put you at ease

  • I am not medically qualified, but as I understand it, tumours and cysts show up differently on scans. Cysts are fluid filled so show up black and are even shaped, whereas tumours look different.

They can't tell whether a tumour is cancerous without a biopsy, but the ultrasound can tell the difference between a cyst and a tumour fairly easily.

I had cysts many years ago and they were always worse just before my period. I was told to wait a few cycles and they would probably resolve themselves. They usually did. I had them for a few years, off and on.

I was also told at that point that if your lump moves, it usually means it's OK, but if it doesn't then it is likely cancer. I didn't really understand the difference until I found the cancer lump - it felt like a rib. Completely solid.

You are right to get checked out again but from what you are describing, it does sound like you have cysts.
