Dexamethasone prior to carbo/paclitaxel

Recently diagnosed with TNBC, I have just completed 3 EC cycles and am due to start 3 cycles of Carboplatin and Paclitaxel with the latter as a weekly dose.

My appointment is at 10am and I’ve been instructed to take 20mg of dexamethasone at 10pm the evening before treatment and 20mg at 4am – both medications to be taken after a meal.

Is this common practice? Has anyone had the same experience – I would love to hear your comments!

  • Hi

I think it’s quite common to be given steroids with some of the chemo drugs.  When I had my weekly Paclitaxel a few years ago, I had to take Dexamethasone the day before, the day of and the day after my treatment but I had a reaction to Paclitaxel so probably why I was given a higher dose of steroids.  Instructions were to take with or just after food.  Sounds like you’ll be having a very early breakfast!

Wishing you best of luck with your treatment

  • Thank you so much for your reply Loffie, I appreciate it hugely.

I think I was more taken aback to be given 20 pills to be taken overnight with two meals. The regular pre-chemo steroids seem to give me an enormous amount of energy, so whether they'll be able to keep me in the chair, remains to be seen ..........

I do hope you have recovered from your neuropathy, it sounds so miserable.

  • Hi Fizzle,

Last year I had the same treatment as you are having and had to have the dexamethasone as you have described. My chemotherapy was at 2pm so took the dex at 2am and 8am. For the middle of the night ones, I just ate a couple of biscuits. Normally biscuits are a treat but eating biscuits at 2am felt like a chore!

Best wishes for your treatment x

  • Thank you so much Ponymad29 - goodness, you not only had the same treatment, but our diagnosis were remarkably similar.

Thank you also for your kind words, it's so reassuring to know that you too had to set the alarm to eat and take pills in the middle of the night!

Biscuits sound like a plan and if this is to happen before every paclitaxel infusion, I'm sure midnight feasts will seem like the norm in the end.

I do hope that you managed the holiday in Northumberland at the end of your treatment and your good health continues.

  • Hi Fizzle,

I was so ready for a week away and Northumberland is a beautiful part of the country. We even sat on a beach and watched dolphins!

I am feeling really well (fingers crossed!), thank you for asking. I have my first year check up on the 25th so I'm sure the nerves will kick in nearer the time.

If there is anything else you would like to ask, then ask away.

    Best wishes
