Best shoes for neuropathy

Apologies, but I am asking another question.  Everyone on here has been very helpful so far, so here goes again!  My friend who has not long finished her chemo and is suffering from neuropathy in her feet, has taken the advice on here and now has an appointment with her GP to get some help.  Her question is can anyone recommend comfortable shoes to help manage her symptoms?  She is thinking more of shoes for everyday wear in the house.  Any good brands?  Skechers seem to be best, but she has no experience of them.  Should she get a size bigger than normal as her feet are slightly swollen?  Any help, as always, greatly appreciated and thank you.

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your friend’s neuropathy in her feet.  I’ve found that wearing normal socks and shoes is too restricting on my feet when they are going through a burning episode, so I’ve purchased some toeless socks and some Rab down hut slippers which are very roomy and comfortable for walking around the house.  Then for going outside, I wear airy sandals during the summer and running shoes during the rest of the year.  Basically anything that isn’t tight and has plenty of room. Hope that helps!

  • Hi

I have nerve damage in one foot (due to a road accident) and I buy Hotter ankle boots, they are lightweight but provide protection. Very comfortable and have slightly rounded toe area, so they don't squeeze the toes which is important if you can't feel this  They're good for outdoors and indoors.  I have to have an insert from the hospital in one shoe, so I get 1/2 a size bigger - Hotter does half sizes, which is great. So, whilst her feet are swollen, get a larger size and then buy some padded inserts when they stop swelling - so that she's not wasting her purchase.

One thing I would advise is for her to treat her feet like a diabetic.  Check the soles of her feet in a mirror regularly because of not being able to feel properly.  I was 17 when I had my road accident and no-one told me this, a couple of years later, I had pain in my ankle and didn't commute was it was - turned out a drawing pin had gone through my sole and I ended up with an ulcer.  At 56, I still need to see a private chiropodist to look after the damaged area!

    Best Wishes, Lesley

  • Do you need special shoes or a special shoe insole? I have a goose foot, so I buy correcting insoles. I think, first of all, your friend should visit a neurologist who will prescribe medication. Then she will need to go to an orthopedist, who will identify some problems with her foot. As far as I know, neuropathy of the legs is often a consequence of flat feet or other diseases of improper walking. I'm sure that an orthopedic specialist will recommend her the most comfortable and good shoes for neuropathy of the feet. By the way, she shouldn't confuse chiropodist and podiatrist. Let her study the chiropodist vs podiatrist article to go to the right doctor.
