Hello,  according to the news if you can’t stand on one leg (especially as you get older) your chances of dying increase.  Well I can’t stand on one leg after all my treatment.  I’m the one hanging on to the wall while everyone else stands on one leg.  Never had this problem before cancer. Anyone else? x

  • Hi Jgau welcome to the forum. I would be tempted to take that news with a pinch of salt. Like you my balance is not the best but mine is to do with Labirynthitis that I had 5 years before I had cancer. I also attend an exercise group where lots of us cannot balance on 1 leg  but some of the folks there are almost 88 so not short livers by any stretch and they cant stand on one leg bit its to do with ageing for them and hip issues.

I would not be worrying about it and maybe ask them for the evidence for such a statement which serves often just to scare people.

  • I had never tried until I broke foot in 2015 just a month after finishing radiotherapy.  I wasn't allowed to put foot to floor for 6 weeks so I learnt to hop and stand on left foot.  After plaster off I had physio where I had to do exercises stand in the healing right foot.  So stand on it and throw ball to wall etc.  Then hop to hoops.  Finally wobble board to get joint moving again.  7 years on I do Pilates and my left foot still stronger when we do balance exercises but if I keep my eyes open I'm ok on both feet.  Turned out I had previous untreated /undiagnosed fracture plus ligament damage in my right foot which would explain why my ankle used to suddenly give our on me.  I used to fall a lot for no apparent reason.  Since doing strengthening exercises not fallen.  So if you can't stand on one foot - might be different  side to side do balance exercises a couple f times a week.  Aside from Pilates balance with eyes open and closed - you will wobble like hell with eyes closed so hold in your core (lower abs back to belly button) plus rotate your feet from ankle while standing on one foot. 3 in one direction, 3 in other.  You'll be surprised how much these mobility exercise help keep your joints moving ,

  • Hi Carol thank you for sharing - I do believe I need to practice as the Pilates is already helping my lower back coccyx problems.  My feet don’t feel right (neuropathy) I’m seeing oncologist next month and will discuss - well done for doing all of your exercises. Jan x

  • Pilates helped my lower back no end too!  Plus I've added CBD oil to my nightly routine.  Under tongue for 2 minutes.  I use flavour I LOVE HEMP oii as it tastes ok.  I use low dose and find it good.

  • Hello Gail,  thank you for your response.  I think it’s a known fact that if your balance is bad you would be more prone to falling over especially as we age.  I’m doing exercise classes, we have one lady who does it on a chair and another with walking sticks.  I was wondering if having chemo can make balance worse as that is what seems to have happened to me.  I know Labyrinthitis is awful too.  Think I need to practice.  I was fit before cancer hope to get stronger.  Best wishes to you x Jan

  • Hi Carol ,  I’m not going to classes in this heat - I can stretch a bit at home xx

  • Hi , I was never much good at standing on one leg, even as a child, so I guess I’ve no hope, really. I do yoga though, which I’m sure does help (but gently in this weather)

    Hugs xxx

  • Hi Moomy, if you are doing yoga that’s fantastic.  I might try it too.  It’s generally moving which helps.  xx

  • My Pilates is now over zoom but when it's hot we do most of class lying down so it's not too bad .  It's a very gentle form of Pilates.  I used to do smother one as well in person which was so brutal just a 45 minute class!
