Aches and pains on Paclitaxel

I had my first round of weekly Taxol just over a week ago and about 48 hours later started to have some horrible aches and pains right in my lower back. It lingered for a few days and then disappeared but came back just before my second round today. It doesn’t really seem to ease with paracetamol.

I mentioned it to the breast care nurse and she didn’t seem worried. because as she pointed out my CT scan just before I started chemo was clear and we know the chemo is working as the tumour is shrinking well. It doesn’t really stop me from worrying though!

Has anyone else had aches and pains with Taxol?? I was prepared for the pins and needles but not really aches.

  • Yes it is often the most annoying side effect for us. I wasn't sure if it was due to the filgastrim which gives low back ache or paclitaxel. I assume it was the latter as I had no issues on EC. I found heat pads soothing and used paracetamol and brufen as needed, but like you found it little use. I tried tramadol but that didn't work and I felt hung over on it. In fact, it was at its worst on the first dose and was far less bothersome on subsequent ones. I also found weighty covers and tight clothing pulled on my joints and made them worse - so loose fitting and lighter covers or not letting them overhang the bed helped too. And moving and walking eased things too. Am sorry you are having a hard time with it. I hope round 2 is better for you. xxx

  • I had awful aches on paclitaxel- especially back and leg aches. I was given some really good painkillers from the cancer unit and took them regularly and they did help. Some yoga type stretching helps and a bit of self massage but I sympathise as they can be bad. You could try a hot water bottle or heated pad too. For me they were worse a couple of days after each session and lasted 3 or 4 days but did ease off eventually. Good luck I hope you find something that helps. Lxx
