HI everyone
I am due to start TCHP in 2 weeks (PICC line) and would really appreciate any advice from someone who has been there.
I'm still debating whether or not to try the cold cap. My hair is shoulder length and very fine already. Should I cut it short before I start treatment? Should I try the cold cap (I don't think I will cope with the frozen head!) or just embrace the fact I am going to lose my hair?
Also, I have been told I will be there for the whole day for the first session. What do I need I need to take with me? Will I be able to walk around? Sorry for all the questions and thank you in advance.
I’ve done 4 chemos out of 6. Didn’t go for cold cap simply because it adds an extra couple of hours to an already long day. There’s injections to be done first, tablets to be given, then the chemo drips start, lunch, (with drip in) etc then given drugs to take home. You only really get up to go to loo as your drip is connected to the wall. You may want to sleep or have foot massage (they do for free at my hosputal). It’s a v pleasant environment to be in and you soon make friends who will be on same routine as you. Good luck with the treatment and be prepared after a couple of days for the effects to kick in. X
I've got 3 sessions left and I tried the cold cap for the first 2 cycles. I also have fine shoulder length hair (I did at the time) and have now lost 99% of it. It started to come out after the 2nd cycle even with the cold cap so I stopped using it at this point. Losing my hair was really tough but somehow got through it and now I have accepted it as I know it will grow back. The unit I go to is really comfortable and I don't feel out of place as the staff know who I am and look after me very well. I take my iPAD and phone so that I can read news, etc to keep me occupied and sometimes I sleep a little . I also take some thick fluffy socks with me as my feet get cold and wear my track suit bottoms with a sweatshirt just to be comfortable. You'll soon get to know what to do and don't worry the time does go by quickly and before you know it will be time to go home.
Thank you Tavares and I hope the rest of your treatment goes well x
Hi
I’ve just had my 4th cycle of EC and I have used the cold cap each time. I can’t say it’s enjoyable but I haven’t lost any hair. I had really long hair and cut it to shoulder length but knowing now I really didn’t need to cut it so soon. The cap only works on the roots.
I would maybe say give it a go the first time and see how you feel. On the other hand if you are ready to embrace losing your hair right from the start then go with it. There is no right answer.
If you try the cap there are a couple of things I would suggest, take some paracetamol before you start and make sure your forehead is covered with something a hairband or I put cotton makeup pads along the front of the cap to protect my forehead.
I took everything with me the first time but quickly realised I didn’t need much. I had Netflix on most of the time and had food and drink.
I hope it all goes well for you x
