Food/drink and chemotherapy treatment

Hi everyone,

I went through my first EC treatment last week for breast cancer. I was told by the nurse to avoid uncooked egg and blue cheese. I looked further into what you have to avoid eating during cancer treatment and I find it so confusing. I understand not eating unpasteurised milk, unpasteurised cheeses, seafood and undercooked meat due to possible infection. My issue is that it also mentioned raw nuts, seeds and their butter, caffeine. raw honey and some cheeses such as camembert or feta. Is that really the case? Does it depend on your treatment? What about alcohol? What about eating out or take-aways?

I am not a vegetarian but we are trying to reduce the amount of meat we eat.

As you can see, I am new to all this and hopefully I am panicking more that I should.

Thank you all and take care.

  • I ignored the dietary advice other than ensuring food was well sourced and fresh, and prepared with good hygiene, because following the guidelines seemed to remove nearly everything I enjoy. I am not recommending this approach by the way, just sharing my experience, which was that I had no issues doing this. Rationalising it, I couldn’t imagine a French onco unit telling people to avoid cheese (pretty well all French cheese is made with raw milk) or avoid rare meat, and I couldn’t imagine a Japanese onco unit telling people to avoid raw fish and shellfish, so I decided it was ultra cautious.

  • I just ate what I normally did or whatever I fancied especially once I started Docetaxel and it knackered my taste buds, I was never advised to avoid anything.

  • Thanks Coddfish and Catndog.

As much as I'm keen to get back to cheese/shell fish etc., I'm failing my immune bloods every session so have had my chemo delayed and been taken into hospital twice.

I don't know if it makes me sound paranoid but I'm happy to miss some foods just now, I'm just so desperate to get chemo over and done with hopefully without any more delays Frowning2️
