Hello all, I’ve finished my chemo (radiotherapy in a couple of weeks) but I’m finding it really hard to walk. My thighs are so painful and I find it difficult to drag my legs along - a bit like wading through surf. Any sort of hill or even climbing the stairs is hard work. Is this normal or ??
Morning Cee
Brilliant that you have now finished chemo but I wonder if its worth going and getting a blood test to check your HP as I don't know how long the chemo stays in your system but the symptoms you put sound a bit like when your HP is low because of the chemo attacking your bone morrow which they sort very easily by iron tablets if not to bad or blood transfusion if needed
Take care sending hugs xxxD
I didn’t have chemo, but after a lot of surgery and post-op pneumonia, I was weak as a kitten. I couldn’t do much - even dressing or brushing my hair was a challenge. When I stood, my legs started shaking with effort after 3 minutes. I sought advice and the first thing I realised was that I was doing that old fashioned thing - convalescence. I needed to gradually increase my activity level, little and often. In February, after my radiotherapy I employed a physical trainer experienced in rehabilitation- she’s not medical, but as a sports physiologist, she is very knowledgeable about the human body and she gave me the confidence to start trying more things, knowing she’d keep me safe.
Now I am able to go on long walks a couple of times a week, I go swimming (splashing about a bit rather than hard core swimming) and I’ve even managed to do a bit of gardening. It’s been slow progress but by being patient and going slow, I can feel my fitness returning.
of course we’re all different so do talk to your BCN, or Macmillan and make sure your doctors on board, but good luck in your convalescence.
Hi Cee,
I finished chemo middle of May and experienced exactly the same symptoms you have described, my muscles ached like I had done a heavy session at the gym ( hadn’t done anything to be honest as I’d felt too crap) so it definitely wasn’t from exercise. My legs felt like lead weights. It has now eased off so hopefully yours will too . Good luck with your radiotherapy, I have just had my 3rd of 15 sessions.
