Hi all, I have had chemo and lumpectomy to remove my breast cancer and have been given the all clear. However I was due to start radiotherapy twice but they have put it off due to technical issues. My question is has anybody refused radiotherapy treatment? As I am having huge doubts now about having it?
Thank you and good luck to all on their journey
HI Missblue1525
I had radiotherapy after a lumpectomy for breast cancer on my left breast. I just wonder why you are having huge doubts about having it. I know when I had the MRI, I was told a raft of potential side effects, especially worrying was potential lung and heart issues. (I couldn't do the breathe technique due to losing an elbow in a road accident, so positioning for this was impossible). Is it the side effects that you are concerned about? TBH, I didn't have chemo. but I would have worried far, far more about this than radiotherapy.
I know some people do suffer fatigue with radio., but I went at the same time as 3 other ladies. 2 of us drank lots of fluids during the day for the whole duration of our radio. The other 2 ladies didn't - they both suffered very badly from fatigue and the 2 of us who drank lots were perfectly fine. My heart has been fine, as have been my lungs. I had some minor burning, but apart from a few days discomfort, it wasn't that much to worry about.
I knew the radio. was there to destroy any potential microscopic cells in that area and I was glad to have the 'belt and braces' approach to my treatment. I had my last 5 year mammogram last month - still awaiting results, but she said she would contact me within 7 days unless it was all ok. - so I am working on the principal, I've got to the end of my treatment without any side effects from radio or the cancer coming back.
Kindest Wishes, Lesley
Hi Missblue1525, I had chemo and a lumpectomy and then 10 sessions of radiotherapy. I found it much easier than the chemo, and didn't have any particularly unpleasant side effects other than some slight redness to the skin and some fatigue afterwards. Although I was given the all clear prior to radiotherapy I had it as an extra assurance as my cancer was grade 3 and I was told it would help mop up any stray cancer cells. What are the technical problems that are delaying your radiotherapy, and have you been told how how long the delay will last?
