Hi All
Well it will be two weeks tomorrow since my lumpectomy and I still have the awful drain in. On my third container and the wound is becoming increasingly painful. 30ml drained overnight and I am becoming more fed up of it by the hour. Does anyone have experience of the drain being in for a while, all the info says it should be out now, and will it just stop quickly? Also, are we supposed to remove the dressing ourselves? My discharge notes state it has to come off tomorrow but there is no way I am attempting it with the drain in place!
Sorry for the moan, I am feeling a bit abandoned and sorry for myself at the moment, not seeing the consultant until next week for my results and seems a long way away.
Take care all x
Hello Kimlou, I know what you mean about the drain being awful, mine was in for almost 2 weeks and I was really glad to see the back of it! Mine was removed when the fluid reached just under 30ml but the nurse did check it every few days to ensure there was no infection. My hospital breast unit has a walk-in centre so I went there and a nurse removed the drain and the dressing as it wasn't something that I wanted to risk doing myself. On removal I also had a new smaller dressing placed over the drain entry point to prevent infection. I'd suggest giving your nurse a ring to seek advice on whether you should be removing the drain & dressing yourself, particularly as the wound has become painful as it sounds like it would be a good idea to also check for any signs of infection x
Hi Kimlou, I too would suggest a call to your BCN, my deep drain was removed on day 15, still draining quite a lot (I’d had a repeat op even redoing the implant 30 hours after first surgery as I bled badly) but my BCN said much longer and it risks infection. I had a small dressing over the hole which I removed a couple of days later I think. My mx was glued so no dressings over the incision.
Hope you get answers
hugs xxx

Thank you both for your replies. I am going to ring the bcn in the morning and ask if I can make an appointment to see someone. Was told the drain would come out once down to 10ml over 2 days but not gone under 20 yet and so sore. Unfortunately we don't have a walk in near me so up early in the morning and calling.
Take care x
