Post operative sensations in affected breast

Hi

I had a lumpectomy and 8 lymph nodes removed on the 20th May. Thought I was doing well post surgery as I regained full movement in arm and shoulder very quickly and my scars healed up very well. I have in past few days been experiencing a feeling  someone was using a stick inside affected breast. Last night whilst having intimate relations (dont laugh) I didn't experience the usual sensation in my affected breast nipple. If anything there was nothing. My partner commented also. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions or thoughts on this.

  • I have also had a lumpectomy and breast reduction. I have very little feeling in my left breast and can’t feel the nipple at all. My surgery was early March. I still have bruising and get like little electric shock pains randomly through my breast. My surgeon did say I might not gain any feeling back and would have reduced sensitivity.  She wasn’t sure if she would be able to reattach my nipple but it was successful just no feeling. So yes I’ve had the same experience and it can take up to year for sensation to return so you may experience more feeling over time. Good luck x

  • It's really early days. Loss of sensation on the skin around the scar is very common as your nerves are affected. My surgeon and oncologist said it takes at east 6 months after radiotherapy (if you're also having this) for everything to settle. Breast tissue doesn't like to be disturbed, there is a lot of healing to be done inside.

It took about a year for my breast to start feeling more like a breast again as there were hard areas still before that. Even now, the skin is changed around the scar and I don't have full feeling back there. I still have nipple sensation, but it is less than it was pre-op.

  • I was told i would need a short course of Radiotherapy as a back up and hormone therapy. Thanks for responding.

  • An addendum to this it was 20th April I had my surgery.

  • Any surgery involves the cutting of nerve endings. Nerves grow at an extremely slow rate, and sometimes never return to what used to be normal in your sensation. I certainly still have numb areas following my skin sparing mastectomy with implant in April 2918, and don’t expect this to change much now.

Hope you have better recovery very soon.
