I developed Cellulitis after my first breast cancer surgery in February this year. I was given antibiotics for 5 days. I had a 2nd surgery in March and my surgery drained fluid from my breast and fitted a drain. Cellulitis was still present but no antibiotics were offered. By early April my Cellulitis worsened and my GP prescribed me antibiotics for one week. My cellulitis didn't improve so my GP prescribed a stronger antibiotic for another week. Unfortunately this didn't work so my GP referred me back to my breast care centre. My breast care centre told me no more antibiotics. I continued to suffer with Cellulitis. I attended an appointment with an oncologist regarding my radiation treatment which was due to start. I told the oncologist about my Cellulitis that I was concerned about, he examined me and agreed it was hot and red but still no further antibiotics given. I went for CT scan and mapping & I mentioned my concerns about my Cellulitis, again no joy. I went onto to have 5 days of the fast forward radiation treatment and on the last day of my treatment I saw a nurse who did a skin review, suddenly I was taken to see a doctor and my Cellulitis became a massive concern. I was immediately given 2 weeks of antibiotics and a list of emergency numbers that I had to ring if my cellulitis became any worse. I've been in quite a lot of pain all week, I've taken codeine and paracetamol to manage the pain. My cellulitis is very hot to touch. I've had another review again today of and again I've been told to go to A&E if it gets any worse. I still have another week of antibiotics to take & fingers crossed. Has anyone else suffered ongoing problems with cellulitis?
Hi Jelly Tots, so sorry to hear about what you have been going through, it sounds like a really tough few months. Sorry I'm not able to offer any advice, I just wanted to send a hug Xx
I’ve had cellulitis 4 times in my foot but not related to my cancer treatment. However it has been taken very seriously each time and I have always been told that if the strong course of antibiotics are not improving it in two days then it would need iv antibiotics. The first time I had it I was in hospital for a week with iv antibiotics. I’m not a doctor but if it is at all worse I’d go to A&E.
Hi Annie6. Many thanks for your advice, good to know xxx
Thank you so much, your kindness means a lot xxx
I hope it clears up for you. It feels a bit like one thing after another in the middle of treatment. I would persist with the docs. If it hasn’t cleared after a week of antibiotics keep a close eye that the infection isn’t spreading and def go to A&E if worse.
It is a journey, that’s for sure! This forum is great for tips and advice though. Hang on in there.
Many thanks again, it's been a nightmare of a journey & hopefully getting there. I hadn't realised how dangerous Cellulitis could be & now that I am fully aware I definitely will present at A&E should it become any worse than it already is. Once again thank you so much xx
Hi, I was given a couple of boxes of antibiotics to take with me when I went abroad on holiday in case I developed cellulitis (which reminds me they are probably out of date now and I should ask for some more.) I also carry a leaflet to give to medical professionals which specifies exactly what antibiotics I am to be given. I've been abroad 4 times since I've had lymphodema and taken my medication with me, but luckily I haven't had to take them. But I feel happier knowing I have them. Cellulitis is not to be taken lightly (I'm not saying you are, but so many people don't realise how bad it can be) and always better to avoid getting it in the first place, so take care of yourself.
Hi & many thanks. I've had Cellulitis now for 3 months & I have only just found out how serious Cellulitis is. I was denied being given more antibiotics by my breast care centre and ended up going through my course of radiation treatment without antibiotics for the Cellulitis and the radiation treatment has made my Cellulitis worse to a point where it had spread from my breast right up towards my neck. If it wasn't for the fast intervention of the radiology team giving me antibiotics for 2 weeks i would have been poorly in hospital by now. The doctor who prescribed my antibiotics couldn't believe that i had been denied antibiotics by a Dr at my breast care centre. I'm not out of the woods yet as I'm currently 7 days in on taking the antibiotics and I had a skin check only yesterday. I have been armed with emergency telephone numbers to ring if my Cellulitis gets any worse over this weekend. What a nightmare xxx
