Mastectomy with reconstruction - drains are annoying

Hi everyone,

So I finished chemo 6 weeks ago had mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with implant and SLNB on Friday 20 May. I havent really suffered with any bad pains around breast, just few niggling pains in armpit where few lymph nodes removed but that's bearable with painkillers. Where the drain goes in is the most annoying thing because it's uncomfortable and gives me most pain. Just feel restricted in movement when trying to move about in bed, I am managing to get some sleep but it's hard when you wake up uncomfortable. I expected and was prepared for all this but it's just when you want to get back to some sort if normality too quickly and it's so frustrating, and this drain - can't wait for it to come out. Sorry for the rant but want it all over and repair sooner rather than later. But its another piece to add to my journey and I know I'll get there in the end slowly but surely xx

  • Rant away.  Drains are horrible, frustrating and much more painful than the surgeons seem to like to think.  I had one in for four weeks after my mastectomy and implant, just wouldn’t slow down.  But you will get there, one day at a time.  You’ve done the hardest part now with chemo and surgery, do you have radio next?

  • Ooh I hope I've not got them in for 4 weeks but I suppose I'd grin and bear it if needed. And yes I've got through the most horrendous part for me which is chemo, still recovering from that too. I don't know if I'm to have radio next got to see what results are from SLNB and pathology first but fingers crossed. Results are in 2 weeks time. Xx
