Hi everyone

I wondered if anyone diabetic has found their blood sugar has shot up since EC chemo and if so how do I manage to keep it down? I eat well low sugar and carbs but it still shoots up. I don’t know if it is chemo or multiple tablets they have given me. Any suggestions helpful!

  • Hi Angie sorry I missed your post but  kindly tagged me .

I am type 2 diabetic diagnosed 10 yr ago which I control with diet and exercise . My chemo was EC x 6  prior to that on annual checks my blood results  were usually Mmol 4.5 ( 7.5 on diagnosis goal posts changed now ) I only have annual check .

As you will have found it’s hard on chemo what with steroids and change of taste buds etc etc. plus I found EC was very cumulative so by no 5 & 6 the nausea was almost permanent.
everyone reacts differently and I don’t know if you type 1 or 2 or drug controlled.

For me I let steroids win and ate when I could but kept to little and often with fridge full of healthy snacks . Think I know sugar content of most treats on shelves now .

For lunches I had quite a lot of home made  soups eg leek & Potato which helped with fluid intake as well . Then light balanced meal in the evening obviously there were days that went completely to pot Joy

Also as I know ,that for me ,exercise is the main contributor to healthy numbers I made determined efforts thru out chemo then Herceptin to maintain walking regime even if I could only manage the garden in first few days of cycle . I also used a wii machine so I could maybe do 10 mins of steps every couple hours in between naps Joy

I would ask Chemo nurse to finger prick if I felt rough to make sure I wasn’t going to high . If it was higher than I liked ie 8 I would ask for blood check . Onco was unperturbed with the 8 reading as I finished chemo and sent letter to diabetic clinic saying do not change the way I managed my sugars as it would settle down .

Its coming up to 3 yr since diagnosis and had first face to face diabetic clinic since covid last month and although I thought they were high . I was told stable at 7 With diet and exercise .

Think I’ve waffled for long enough don’t know if it will help but to be honest by end of chemo I was less worried by changes .

let us know how you get on
