Gene testing

Morning everyone

My daughter has recently been checked after  a self referral for breast cancer. She is clear thankfully but the consultant told her that we should be tested genetically. I have had 2 occurrences of BC 12 years apart. My question is should I talk to the BCN or go to my GP to get these tests initiated?

Thanks for any advice x

  • Hi Pixdee,

I have just come through the genetic testing, found out yesterday I’m negative (5 weeks after blood test and 4 months from referral). I was referred by my Breast Surgeon/MDT as 2 primary breast cancers in 8-9 years.

As far as I understand it your GP could refer you, you’d go through screening and then testing if they feel appropriate and then if positive your family would eligible for testing. There are lots of booklets available, mine were given to me and written by Macmillan. Link here to information https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/worried-about-cancer/causes-and-risk-factors/genetic-testing

I hope that helps. Best wishes, Karen

  • Hi Karen

Thank you for the information, that's really helpful.  I'll check the links. Relaxed

    Best wishes

  • I was referred for genetic testing by my breast cancer team, so the initial steps were done in the same hospital where I am being treated. However, this was during treatment. If you are still in touch with the breast cancer team and they have not discharged you, then possibly you could contact your nurse and request a referral. If not, the GP can refer you, but it would be better if you have something in writing from the consultant who recommended it (possibly your daughter's appointment summary letter?)
