Hi having my mastectomy tomorrow at aged 40.  Why do I feel so calm and unnerved

  • Hi

I had a lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) last Friday and, like you, I felt calm about it.

There's nothing wrong with feeling as you do. Everyone is different and reacts differently to situations so please don't feel there's anything wrong with how you're feeling.

I hope everything goes well tomorrow and you don't have too much waiting around before you go to theatre.

I have exactly the same reaction and couldn’t quite understand why!! I laughed on the trolley on way to op theatre and told the surgeon not to look at my cellulite! I was actually relieved to get rid of the offending breast!  Good luck and I hope you continue to be ‘at ease’ with it all xx

  • Thank you latchbrook and tavares thank god I'm not the only one. It's hitting home now I've just ironed me daughters clothes. Have to say bye to her til sun at 5 as she staying at her dad's xx

  • I think that we're so conditioned to seeing people portrayed on the TV and in the cinema as completely falling apart when they're told they have cancer that we feel that there must be something wrong with us if we don't.

Hope everything goes smoothly tomorrow and do let us know how you get on.

  • Thank you and I will do. Bit of a mess now she's gone. Silly question I forgot to ask nurse today but do I need to take my acrilic nails off before operation x

  • I had my single mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy on Saturday, I was quite together about it all as well until I had to say bye to my daughter.

Hope all goes well for you tomorrow x

  • I was told to take nail varnish off before my op

  • I don't know for definite but they did check to see if I was wearing nail varnish (I wasn't). I think it's something to do with the 'clip' they put on one of your fingers which records blood oxygen levels. It would probably be safer to take them off.

  • Snap mate never felt so shite in my life. Hope you both ok xx

  • Good luck. I have surgery on Friday too for a second excision after lumpectomy in October (Ive had chemo in between). I'll be glad to get it over with . I'm okay most if the time with the occasional thought to panic. It will be fine.
