Pain in side ribs

Hi - I have had lumpectomy - chemo, lymph nodes removed and radio therapy which all finished around August 2018.

I am getting pains around the side rib on the same side I had the surgery/treatment etc. I have been back to the hospital and had mammograms, ultrasound checks along with BC consultant checks but no one can pinpoint what the issue is so long after my procedure. Everything seems to come back with nothing found but these pains are getting worse as time goes by. There is no redness or swelling in the area but these pains also track under the arm pit and into upper arm.

Has anyone else had a similar experience as these pains wake me up at nights and are getting to be quite a pull on normal life.

cheers

  • Hi Rose46

I had same and finished active treatment 2020. Now on ibandronic acid and letrozole. I still feel tender around the surgery side and numb and tingly under arm where I had clearance. I have an odd ache and tenderness in other armpit, the arm where cannulas/ chemo went in. All checked and no one can explain it. It doesn't wake me but I always feel generally sore and tender, I think there's a lot of muscle tension involved.

  • Yes I hsve rib pain but I'm only 6 weeks post chemo ( I've also had lumpectomy and axillary clearance in October 2021). I assume its just due to the surgery there is bound to be some scar tissue.

  • I wondered if mine was damage/scarring to the lymphatic tissue or another radiotherapy side effect

  • Yes I have rib pain I'm only 6 weeks post chemo  ( I had full left mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, and full node clearance, 2 out of 17 were affected in October 2021). Its more of a niggle than a pain and comes and goes.

I had my follow up appointment yesterday with the consultant/surgeon he didn't seem worried when I mentioned it, but said if that niggle is still there in 4 weeks to call back and he would arrange a bone scan.

He said everything is still healing, and lots of damage to nerves and muscles can take a long time to heal.

I had grade 2 IDC  20mm treated with surgery, x3 EC x3 docetaxol chemotherapy.

  • I've also been put on Tamoxifen for 10 years
