Can anyone tell me if the weird taste wears off after chemo until the next time or is it here to stay? Any recommendations what to avoid? Already found can’t eat ketchup and wholemeal bread. So bitter and baked beans!! Maybe acidic foods ?
Hi Cazza b,
I had EC chemo every 2 weeks and it didn’t wear off, the one time treatment was postponed for a week so a 3 week break between I’d did come back briefly towards the end of the 3 weeks if that makes sense, most things tasted rubbish I think it’s just finding what works for you, jacket potatoes and cheese worked for me and chicken soup other than that everything tasted like cardboard, even water was disgusting, flavoured fizzy water was better.
also milky coffee and horlicks was nice instead of tea.
It’s a horrible time but it will get better, I’m nearly 5 weeks since last chemo and taste is back to normal.
xx
Thank You Scow 74. I’m having chemo every 3 weeks so maybe my last week! I realise the plainer stuff will be better. At one time losing my taste was the worst thing that could happen being a foodie and liking my wine. Now it’s the Least of my worries!!
I had no taste issues on EC but I've switched to Docetaxel now and everything feels like an old sock in my mouth, and tastes pretty similar. Two rounds so far and for me too it has taken about 10 days for taste to come back. I find that Ribena is good.
Thanks. Will try it. Can’t drink tea and coffee.
I have TCHP 3 weekly and taste off first 2 weeks and eases off the 3rd week! I couldn’t drink plain water I find apple and blackcurrant squash drunk through a plastic straw helps. I also drink orange juice mixed with a flavour tonic water (fevertree orange). I can eat porridge cereal with cold milk, wine gums, boiled travel sweets, baked potatoes, pasta, macaroni cheese, ginger biscuits just about!
I have my final 6th round on May 11th then Phesgo only for 12 times after, am hoping taste improves then.
I have a blog which may help you, community.macmillan.org.uk/.../tchp-journey
Hope that helps and good luck x
