Hey, can anyone help?

How do you sleep with a pic line,? had it put in yesterday, but had an awful night sleep

I'm a side sleeper , all curled up , I was told I could still sleep on my side , but how?

It's in my left arm , I sleep on my left side mostly in-between right, sometimes roll on my back ,

I couldn't relax last night had to sleep in my back, which was awful,  I was worried about dislodging it,

What do I do?

  • Hi

Sorry to hear you are having trouble with sleeping.  It's really difficult when you are conscious of it in your arm whilst you are asleep and it disturbs your sleep.  I wonder if you could have a pillow in the way when you start sleeping on your right side and then if you try and roll over in your sleep, the pillow prevents it, so that you end up on your back and then on your right side again?

When I was younger I had an external fixation in my leg and it meant I couldn't sleep on my left side (which is  the side I sleep on mostly). I had it in for 13 months and meant I had to sleep on my back or my right side.  I struggled for a while, but eventually my body got used to not sleeping that way - mainly because the metal bars dug into the mattress or my leg! So, I had to get used to it and I used a pillow to protect my other leg and each time the bars hit the pillow it forced me to roll over (rather than causing me pain - which for you would be hopefully stopping you dislodging your Pic line).  Hopefully it won't be too long before your body gets used to sleeping on the non normal side.

    Kindest wishes, Lesley

  • Hi Etna,

My fiance has a picc line and was worried about it when he first had it (was put in at the beginning of feb), but now he's gotten used to it. I think it's more the fear of it dislodging it than anything else. Once you are used to having it, it will be second nature!
