Recently had a mastectomy and had my results given to me by Dr in a very impersonal manner plus I later found out she told me the wrong grade for my cancer.

This was not my own surgeon.

It does not instil much confidence in me.

Very tearful tonight.

Doreen.

  • Hello Doreen. Not good that you were seen by someone other than your own surgeon, and even worse that she gave you the wrong grade. How did you find out?

I hope your breast nurse is someone you feel you can talk to, but you can always call Macmillan, and in a lot of hospital they also have an office you can walk into and talk to a nurse or a volunteer face to face. (Where I am, the Macmillan nurses are very involved and can give practical help.)

What is your treatment plan now that the mastectomy is done?

  • My breast nurse came in after the Dr and I told her what had been said.

She later on phoned me at home to give me the correct grade.

See oncologist on 14th this month to get my plan.

15 of my lymph nodes were cancerous and was told I was a higher risk of it coming back.

    Which was upsetting.

  • Yeah, I am not surprised! Nothing about this is right. In ten days when you see the oncologist, I'd verify with him or her everything you have been told so far -- grade, lymph nodes findings, chances of recurrence.

Are you recovering ok from the surgery?

  • I am going to phone my breast nurse today.

I've had to get seromas drained every week and developed cording so seeing physio on Thursday.

  • Sigh. Nothing in all of this has gone the easier route, has it.

You have the right to request the pathology report. This would show exactly what they have found and everything else they had to say about it, cutting out error-prone middlemen.
