Hi there,
I had a lumpectomy and some sentinel nodes removed in February and I then noticed cording under my arm but with exercise it seemed to improve and I have good movement.
Yesterday, as I was getting ready for bed I noticed a ‘ridge’ on my abdomen just under the affected breast going down as far as my umbilicus and I don’t have one on the other side! On examination it feels like large cording!
This is a surprise to me as I didn’t know it could appear there. It feels strange….
Is this cording - and has anyone else noticed this?

Hi Grue welcome to the forum. I had a look when you said this and yes it can appear where it has, but it is an unusual side effect but not unheard of. If I was you I would be in touch with the Breast team on Monday and ask them to have a look at that for you and ensure thats what it is.

I asked my BCN and she replied that it could be Mondor’s syndrome or as I understand a thrombosed vein post breast surgery.
I’m not convinced but she suggested I ask the radiographers to look (I started my 19 doses today)
I can’t feel it lying down - only when I stand and brush touch from one side of my upper abdomen to the other.
it feels like cording. I guess I must be a rarity!
Hi Grue, I think I have this too. I have recently noticed a painful area over my ribs and could not work out what it was until I stretched the skin, then I could see two ridges running across the base of my ribs down towards my abdomen on my mastectomy side. The ridges are tender to touch. I assumed that cording was an underarm thing but doing an internet search tells me that it can arise over the ribs and abdomen and that it can happen some time after surgery. It is nine months since my surgery.
Do you still have yours and did you get any treatment for it, if so what?
Vee
Hi Vee,
I think this is more common than we think… I probably wouldn’t have noticed it as I have a bit of a muffin top! And only came across it accidentally when I smoothed my hand across my upper abdomen. It’s still there.
It was confirmed for me that it was abdominal cording and I was advised to massage it and bend and flex.
Its not a problem for me, it doesn’t restrict my movement and I’ve sort of forgotten about it. I don’t have any pain.
I think if you find it painful and disconcerting them maybe a physio referral would be a good idea.
