Just wondering what breast cancer patients out there feel about taking supplements to prevent secondaries. Has anyone started a regime of supplements and are you feeling any benefit.
I was already on a health diet with hardly any processed foods. And we have had rescue dogs all our lives so have always been daily walkers. I already had osteoporosis so am aware the Zometa can make this worse so have been prescribed Vitamin D and Calcium but I can chew that calcium. But am wondering about other supplements...
My oncologist told me in no uncertain terms that there is no evidence of eating this or that makes any difference to breast cancer. Obviously, we should all be eating healthily and keeping a good weight but beyond that, don't worry too much.
I do take vitamin d, calcium, magnesium and turmeric but I was taking the last 3 already for headaches and inflammation, I just added in vit d after diagnosis to keep myself healthy and it also seems to be good against covid.
I even asked about alcohol intake once alcohol tasted OK again after chemo. I felt so guilty drinking as there is a link between alcohol and drinking for your first BC diagnosis. My oncologist said it was completely. Fine to drink as long as I wasn't binging and there isn't any evidence that it cause BC to recur.
If you're already eating a healthy, balanced diet then I wouldn't worry to much.
The only thing to add is if you had a hormone positive BC, then avoid phytoestrogen supplements like soya, black cohash etc.
Forgot to mention that at my 6 monthly review with the pharmacist, she told me if I was going to tak calcium, vit d etc then don't take anything above daily recommended amounts. My current bottle is way above RDA so when I buy my next one, I'm going to significantly reduce. Most supplements seem to be in huge amounts, which often cause more harm than good.
I also take hemp seed oil as I fou d my hips were really sore overnight on exemestane and the hemp helps.

Your information about soya based products not being good to take for people diagnosed with oestrogen positive BC. I've been taking menopause support tablets from the supermarket shelves not Over counter.
I didn't realise this was bad to take
Like many menopausal women who didn't want to take HRT.
I sought out a solution.
I need help with the diet though but I'm not overly unhealthy as I work out and walk often.
But since lockdown my diet is rubbish and I eat to much sweet product.
I need help in vitamin supplement and pain management for arthritis.
Where would you recommend.
Oh I'm stage 1 having a 23mm lump removed next week. HER new but high oestrogen positive.
I'm very scared I'm not going to lie but not showing this with my family.

Soya like tofu is considered fine. Soya ISOLATE is not, and found in a surprising range of foods. Low dose aspirin is linked to a lower recurrence (currently trials are running with different low doses) as is intermittent fasting of 13-14 hours a day. Dairy should be avoided as much as possible...
