Lymphedema after WLE & SNLB

Hi,

I had a WLE and SNLB for breast cancer in October 2021 and just finished 12 weeks of Paclitaxel. I noticed my arm swelling about 5 weeks ago and have been told it most likely is Lymphedema. This has come as a shock seeing as though I only had 3 lymph nodes removed. I'm struggling to cope with this news and while I know I should count myself lucky that the cancer was caught early, I'm still upset this has happened.
I was just wondering if anyone else has been through this and if the swelling will ever go down? My unaffected arm is really slim so the difference is very noticeable and it is uncomfortable. I have been given a compression sleeve to wear but this too starts to hurt if I wear it all day.
Any advice would be so welcome.

Thanks,

Lina

  • Hello. I developed swelling in armpit and cording after radiotherapy. She won't confirm if it lymphoedema or not. It has gone down but it is slow going. I too was given a compression sleeve. After a couple of weeks of wearing it she advised to wear it alternate days and its usually off by 4pm as it hurts my arm plus constricts me doing things. I also get fluid build up so that by the end of the day the bottom of my affected boob is hard. Getting my bra off helps and some massaging and stroking it in an upwards movement helps. I wasn't warned about this in fact due to covid, followup has been non existent. I've got more info from ladies on this forum than medics but thats cos I don't speak to any of them. I did find my arm ached at first but keep doing the exercises as they do help. Keep going....one day at a time x
