I know this is going to sound thick but I think oncologist = chemotherapy

Is an oncologist for every aspect of treatment apart from surgery ? Eg if you just had hormone treatment or radiotherapy or whatever would you still see an oncologist for that ?

  • Hi Dollydimple, oncologists deal with all aspects of cancer treatment, not just chemo, so will be involved with hormone treatment, radiotherapy etc x

  • Thank you for this ! Feel so silly , clueless

    hope you’re doing ok

  • Hi Dollydimple

I only saw a member of the oncology team for my radiotherapy consent appointment. My breast surgeon prescribed my hormone therapy and calcium/ Vit D based on the MDT recommendations and I am now back under the breast care team having completed my 5 sessions of RT. So my oncology involvement was brief and focussed on RT only.

  • Ah I see , so varies depending on your treatment plan . Did you have radio after surgery then onto  hormone treatment ?

    Thank you

  • Hiya

My sequence was surgery , prescription given at results appointment by surgeon then onto oncology for RT then back to surgical/ breast care team for end of treatment review on 7th March. I started anatrazole about 3 weeks before RT and 3 weeks after surgery

My surgeon also did referral for update DEXA scan to check my current bone density ( I have pre existing osteoporosis in spine ) and will prescribe bone strengthening meds if scan shows its worsened ( it was improving on HRT which I've had to stop  post BC diagnosis)

Had I needed chemo I think I'd have lingered in oncology longer before coming back to breast care team but as I was only having RT it was a brief move across and back

  • Hey Wave tone1

I know my treatment may be different ( fearing the worst ) but couldn’t get my head around the roles of the different Drs

    Clearer now , thanks again
