Mouth ulcers

I’m 2 week into my first EC chemo and have not had a bad experience so far apart from very sore ulcers on my tongue and gums feel tender . The ulcers are making me pretty miserable and I’m finding it hard to eat , even drinking water causes pain. I’ve tried salt water and various none alcohol mouth washes , which do ease the pain for a short time time. I’m worried that they won’t heal with being on chemo and that I will get more after each infusion.

I know everyone is different but wondered if anyone has any advice or experience of the same .
Best wishes to everyone.

  • Hi, you're ahead of me in treatment so I feel unqualified to respond, except to say that when I shared with the NHS dental hygienist that I'm in breast cancer treatment, she said to contact her if my mouth becomes sore like yours. She said there are treatments available that she can prescribe. Sorry for butting in, but if this helps you to know then I'm glad. Others will know more than me, I just didn't want to walk past without saying hi. I hope you get to relax from the pain & discomfort really soon. x

  • Thankyou so much This2willPass for taking the time to reply. I have spoken to my doctor and he has prescribed me some hydrocortisone muco adhesive tablets for mouth ulcers. Although my chemist doesn’t stock them so may have to wait a day or so for them. I don’t suffer with mouth ulcers normally but I know it’s one of the side effects of chemo. My appetite has been pretty good up till now but the pain is really putting me off eating. Tbh I never even thought of contacting the dentist but will definitely keep that in mind for any future mouth problems.

Good luck with your upcoming treatment.

  • I am currently undergoing chemo (Carboplatin) for ovarian cancer and when I went for my last chemo session the nurse asked me if I was suffering from mouth ulcers.  I'm not but this is a common side effect of the treatment.  I would definitely mention this when you go for your next treatment and they may get something for you from the pharmacy at the hospital that you can take home with you that will help you.

I hope the rest of your treatment goes well.

  • I’m starting EC on Tuesday but read somewhere that Holland & Barrett organic tea tree mouthwash helps, so I’ve stocked up and will start using it on Monday. Good to hear other than that your treatment is going well xx

  • Thankyou Sarah 16 I will definitely mention it , my next infusion is 28th so hoping these have healed by then .

  • Thankyou orange angel, I will try anything.

  • hi OrangeAngel and anyone else....I read that too so I bought some online used it at least 3 times a day and so far so good...start 2nd EC on Wed. x

  • Hi   my advice is use junior soft toothbrush and mild toothpaste , daily mouthwash and try bonjela on ulcers .

Also watch out for oral thrush your unit should be able to provide some meds for you to use as this is a usual SE of EC .

My chemo was EC x 6 and the SE are very cumulative so I always kept meds at the ready lol Joy

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

  • I had this problem when I was on AC. My oncologist prescribed a mouth wash that helped at first but then didn't, so I was prescribed a differnt mouth wash that then did the job and got rid of the problem. If there is no appointment with the consultant in the next few days I'd call the breast nurse and either ask for an appointment or a prescription.

  • Thankyou everyone for your replies. I will definitely speak to my consultant as I don’t want a repeat of these ulcers after every infusion.
