Hi, I had DCIS ( 75mm by 45 mm) last year and a mastectomy. Last week I felt a hard area with pain and itching ( like last time). I have called the open access team and have an appointment next week for one stop assessment clinic. Just interested to know whether there is anyone who has had breast cancer ( DCIS or different then discovered in the other breast). Was told its unlikely breast cancer this time and understand it won’t be connected with DCIS last time as margins were clear. I have also been told you don’t get pain & itching generally with cancer, however, thats what drew to examine the breast first time around. I have learned so much from past time about worrying and not dwelling on what ifs. Just would like to know if there is anyone out there in this community where this has happened? Thanks x
Not me, but I really don't like it when they say things such as, "don't get pain & itching generally with cancer," as this frame of mind would block that person from considering any a-typical presentation, could lead to them missing a diagnosis, and does nothing to help the patient's peace of mind. You can ask to be seen by a different medical professional, so as to avoid contact with people who think that way, and especially as you had already presented with exactly these "don't generally" symptoms and it was indeed cancer last time.
This time it may be nothing, but you are absolutely right to be alert and get it checked out.
Hi Nat
I would agree with greycat. You are right to be alert and get anything that is concerning you checked out. Your query about itching is interesting . I had a small screening detected IDC that was not palpable by anyone as was deep in the breast. What I did have looking back was an itch in the crease of my breast that I put down to my underwire bra. Post surgery the itch has gone and my incision is where the itch was so it makes me wonder
Of course itches and sensations are usually innocuous but I share this to validate your wish to get it checked. I'm sure you will be reassured
Best wishes xx
Thank you Greycats and Jurassicgirl for your replies. Yes last time mine was a definite itch in the area consistently, then after surgery nothing! I could also palpate and feel the area as it was large for DCIS. This is true this time I can feel a long thin hard area again. I was due all my survellience scans in March and they were not going to bring them forward but then decided to. I had covid again in December so hoping its just that causing some issues. X
How interesting you had the itching too that went post surgery!
Covid can cause all sort of odd after effects it seems so right to consider that impact
Sending best wishes that your scans are reassuring and confirm all OK xx
Thanks, my mammogram showed a small area of
micro calcifications so going back for biopsy in a few weeks as they can’t get me in before. Xx
