Hi,

I’m one week passed my 4th cycle of chemo and I’ve managed quite well up until these last 2 sessions. Whilst I am starting to turn a corner following cycle 4, I’m still struggling to quench my thirst because nothing tastes nice. My mouth was more sore this time but that is now subsiding but I need to drink and nothing tastes nice. Can anyone recommend anything. I normally drink tea, coffee, lemon squash and Diet Coke, not the best choices but at least I’m going off them at the moment  Joy I’m was going to try ice pops but that isn’t going to keep me hydrated. I know water is the best but I’m rubbish at drinking just water at the best of times. Maybe I should just grow up and drink it.
Thank you in advance of any advice recommendations.

  • Hi LB

I had a similar problem in that everything I drank tasted disgusting.  I swapped tea and coffee for instant hot chocolate (a low calorie version as I was putting on enough weight!).  I found fizzy water more palatable than normal water.  I also tried different cordials, eg. for a few weeks I enjoyed elderflower cordial, then lime cordial.  Heavily diluted fruit juice also worked, eg a quarter/third apple or orange juice topped up with fizzy water.

I’ve seen other people recommend tonic water or pineapple juice as they can cut through the nasty taste that chemo sometimes gives you.

Good luck with your tastebuds and the rest of your chemo!

    Hi Jomor,

Thank you so much for your recommendations. I like sparkling water so will start that straightaway but will definitely try the other recommendations.

    Thanks again.

  • Hi I found ocean spray's cranberry and raspberry squash quite nice along with tonic water. X

  • Hi I had same problems
Try frozen grapes to cleanse tastebuds also I found no added sugar Dandilion &Burdock & cream soda  in Morrisons . For me the taste of our water was horrible after being my drink of choice . This made even tea taste horrible
Unfortunately it really is keep trying til you find something . One trick I used to try to keep hydrated was I ate water based food Cucumber etc also lots of homemade soup especially leek and potato using water base stock .

    hope you find something

  • What were you suggesting to do with cucumber RoflRoflRofl

Makevyiyr own lollipops and sorbet.  It's all fluid and coldness might help.

  • I mostly manage with fizzy water and can only drink coffee first thing in the morning. I buy the individual 500ml bottles in packs of 6 or 8 and try and drink at least 2 daily.. It’s a more expensive way of doing it but I find the big bottles go flat very quickly. Unfortunately fizzy water is in short supply in some supermarkets at present so it’s a case of buy  in bulk when you see it. I also have a Berocca although the pink ones taste better for me than the orange at present.

I have has 4 EC treatments and now just finished 3 of 12 Pactlixel. The taste problem is getting progressively worse but my mouth does not seem quite so dry on the Pactlixel.

I hope you find something that helps. There are lots of good suggestions on here x
