Hi all, so 6 months post chemo. Hair growing back, slowly. What to do? I always had long black hair. Now soft, thin, short, grey. Going to live with the grey for now. But never really went to a hairdresser. Always coloured and trimmed my own hair myself. So I don't have a hairdresser I know. It's all a bit untidy. I'm open to ideas. In fact I need advice on what to do with it. At what stage do you go to the hairdresser? What do you ask them to do? Ideally I want my long hair back. Realise that's not going to happen but would like to work towards maybe a short bob. But then if you cut it how does it ever get longer? It sounds a bit daft but I'm not sure where to start. Anyone got any guidance to get me going?
Hi ! I was and am still in the hair and beauty industry for 34 years .
Was a hairdresser owning 4 salons then in the recent last seven years stepped away from the chair and run a business consultancy service for salon owners . This involves me travelling around the country advising salons on best practices to manage and maximise on their strengths .
A short answer to your question is a really good sharp cut to help achieve a classic Bob is a great idea . This will strengthen the hair and allow it to grow stronger without breaking due to the fragility of the ends. Another good idea would be to firstly aim for a Graduated Bob . This would allow the head shape to be stronger at the back . This is a tricky , highly technical hair cut however beautiful when cut properly .
If you would like could you send me some more details of your hair and area you live in ? I could advise on most suitable products ( I don’t get any sort of payment for this so hopefully Macmillan will allow that post ) plus recommended salons in your. Area that would be compassionate to your current needs .
Much love

Hi PenelopeJ57 that's sounds great. I wonder if I can send you a private message?... I'll explore. Just popping out for my PCR test for my nextt treatment this week. ( Phesgo) I will get back to you. Thank you so much.
I'm a year on and still haven't been to a hairdresser. Like you, I'm keen to get my long hair back so am intending to let it grow.
Mine has come back in quite curly though - and same natural colour as before - so I am getting away with the fact it is different lengths and has no shape.
Most people I meet seem to love it!
Great stuff ! A lot of people find after chemo that their hair grows back curlier than before .
Might be an idea to have the ends lightly trimmed which will encourage strong hair growth . Especially if it’s been a year .
Using a serum based product mid length to end will also smooth down the hair shaft and stop frizzy or unruly type behaviour .
O would always encourage everyone to massage their scalp as much as possible which stimulates blood supply and can help with healthy growth .
5 minutes a day , no need to wash the hair it’s the rotary action of your fingers on your scalp that helps .
Hope this advice is useful .

Thanks PenelopeJ57 you're a star. Hi Beatthebreast... Mines come back in with its natural colour...LOL ... Grey. I've been colouring it for years, so it's a bit of a shocker to suddenly be totally grey rather than just a few roots. I hadn't quite realised just how grey it was. Hey hoh. My hair was always curly so hopefully will return as such but it must be very strange if you are used to straight, quite the change. I think I need to cultivate a bit of patience on the hair front but trying to be proactive and get my life back, so to speak. Good luck, take care.
Hi I finished chemo Dec 2019 hairdresser shaved fuzz on a no2 before last one so shape there . Went into lockdown in March with short fuzz needed haircut to contain riot of thick chemo curls in the July when allowed out .
I used Nioxin during chemo and re growth my hair has grown back thick and strong even though I’m 72 . I actually prefer my hair short now so have a pixie cut . Hairdresser trimmed every 4weeks initially Hardly taking any thing off . Like PenelopeJ57 says it means hair can then grow healthy .
Penelope I now know not to Handle hair too much and not to overdo things with product and heat tools . Also to rely on good hairdresser .
I use nioxin too , shampoo, conditioner , and hair thickening gel , and I’ve just had my 3rd chemo
haven’t shaved my head as opted to keep my whispy baby hair , keep expecting it to fall out overnight , might fall when my eyebrows and eyelashes go?
Shoulder length after 2 years sounds great Pusheen. I'm really pleased for you. Hi Deb3112. Good luck with the chemo, I never totally lost eyebrows and eyelashes although they did get really sparse. Eyebrows looking pretty good now, eyelashes returning too but a bit more slowly. Take care and have on in there.
