My company say my role is such that I have to be in the workplace, I have finished most of my treatment but still on herceptin (which I understand can reduce the immune system). I have told them I am anxious about it and they asked what they can do to help me. I avoid using the workplace kitchen and bathroom as much as I can and sit in one of the quietest spots in the building but sometimes my role is such that I have to interact and move around the building (wearing a mask of course). Is there anything else I can do to protect myself please?
Ring Macmillan helpline as you are covered by disability discrimination act for life now so employer has to make reasonable adjustment. They will advise better hopefully.
Off the top of my head : You can ask for allocated desk if you hot desk so limits others using. Ask for anti bac wipes to be provided on desk for you to clean. Instead of moving around building to see people can you do it via zoom/MS teams. Can you start/finish earlier/later to avoid people if it's fixed start/finish times.
Wear an FFP2 mask when around areas where there are people. It gives 94+% protection rather than the 20-35% the cloth and surgical ones give. Our school uses Clinell wipes (the ones used in hospitals) as not all wipes are equal. Windows open if possible too. I wear a wide scarf to pull into a shawl. Would you be told if people treated positive at your work? I know that there is a privacy issue asd it's medical roommatee
Fingers crossed you'll be ok. I run a large busy library where I have 20-40 Y12 students all day, and everyone at break times. Just before Christmas we had 27 staff off with covid or recovering from covid, four Y12 students with positive PCR tests off, and another four with negative lateral flows but close contacts, sick, and awaiting PCR results! Our family are all double/ triple vaxxed and had the alpha (most deadly) variant last year though,.
Good luck, and don't br afraid to say if you are worried,, as thr next few weeks are going to be 'interesting'.
Thank you Carol. I've already requested an allocated desk and they have provided wipes and sanitiser throughout. Most of my work can be done digitally, I'm not a recognised key worker but a facilities manager so whilst the office is open (reading small print allowing those in for mental wellbeing) then I have to be there too. I've been trying to start early and go home lunchtime and work from home in the afternoon but my manager wants to increase my hours to full time in the office. Just feels like I can't win and feeling really deflated by it.
thank you @Londonmumof2, I've done what I can in terms of masks, sanitiser, quiet desk etc and told them I am anxious but still quite insistent I spend more time in the building even though I have proved I can manage 95% of my workload from home. Starting to feel deflated
In this case you need advice from MacMillan and your union if you are in one. They legally have to make a reasonable adjustment. Do you work public or private sector. Easier to enforce public sector
Hi
Have you done a covid age calculation https://alama.org.uk/covid-19-medical-risk-assessment/
You should ask your occupational health department or person to do a risk assessment for you, even in a small company they should be able to do this - there are numerous free websites where they can find out information on what to do.
I think you are probably in a grey area , if your risk comes back high your company should recognise that. I work for a University and manage several staff , it is difficult now to balance people’s genuine needs with those who would simply prefer to work from home (and I am not for a minute saying you fall into that category) and your company may feel pressure to be seen to be treating everyone the same - unfortunately we don’t always know everyone’s circumstances and managers cannot divulge these to anyone else, so , as a manager , it can be difficult to manage others expectations.
So if you were my member of staff , I would make sure that risk assessments are done , that your covid age was calculated , and take advice from our HR department, Our workplace is the safest place I have been (including hospital) and I know everyone feels very safe there, hopefully this will be the case for you.
Hopefully this gets resolved , it is stressful on top of everything else and a good manager should recognise that and do what they can to make you feel as safe as possible.

Loved your calculator. Strangely did mine and 71, dus my hubby's and his 66. He's 2 years older than me and was on the Welsh Govt. shielding list dye to asthma (moderate) but mainly due to be a patient for life at Spinal unit due to spinal cord damage. He didn't get any points for that in calculator We both took early retirement before pandemic so no problem. My daughter who works for LA is permanently WFH now which is just as well as her OCD which was severe before Covid is now so bad she won't leave house and won't let anyone aside from her husband in house .
if it were me, I would be insisting on working from home while still on herceptin if that reduces your immune system. You are in active treatment for breast cancer, they should be making allowances for you.
If you CAN do your job from home, you SHOULD be doing it at home. That's government advice now anyway, in all 4 nations, so for you to be immunosuppressed and going through breast cancer treatment on top, they really should be doing more for you. From what you've said, you could easily be doing calls rather than actually seeing people.
Do you have occupational health at work, you can sometimes speak to them informally, as well as getting advice from Macmillan as has been suggested.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
