Hi everyone, this is my first post but like one of you other lovely ladies I have hit a bit of a downer today so thought I’d reach out.
I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Oestrogen receptor breast cancer on October 11th and had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy on November 5th. On Monday I got the wonderful news that there was no spread and I was given the all clear. Up until then I had had very little pain but then it kicked in big time. My lovely breast care nurse had warned me that when the nerves started knitting back together this would happen but I wasn’t prepared for how painful it is when it happens. It literally takes your breathe away.
I have spoken to the nurse this morning and she said I could go and see her if I wanted reassurance there was nothing untoward going in but I don’t think there is so I don’t want to waste her time.
I’ve been doing the exercises I was told to do and squeezing a squashy ball and the dead feeling I had at the back of my upper arm is more or less back to normal but it’s been replaced by a stabbing pain. I’m wondering if I’m doing too much and what other ladies have done to help with the pain. I’ve been advised to take regulate doses of paracetamol and ibuprofen which I’d stopped because I hate taking tablets.
Sorry for the long post xx
Hello. I empathise as I too have similar story. Click my name to read my tale. The back of my arm was very tingly for a while and armpit quite numb. Although I have feeling back it is still tingly, however mine is now exacerbated by swelling and cording post radiotherapy. I was told that nerves grow back at 2mm per month so it does take a long time to heal especially if they've had a rummage around to remove nodes. I don't want to come across as too negative but it took a couple of months for my arm to feel better. I too hate taking tablets but have resorted to it as the pain can be unbearable some days. I would advise to start back up again. Its very early stages for you post surgery. Persevere if you can with the tablet taking and keep going with the exercises as it does help x
Hi there and thanks for reply. It’s good to know what’s happening is normal. Sorry you are still having problems. I wasn’t aware that could happen after radiotherapy. Mine starts at the beginning of the new year..
I’ve been taking the tablets today and it does help xx
Hi there
It’s definitely early days for you and yes it’s normal to have pain when the nerves start to knit back together. My surgeon told me they had had to have a good dig around to get to the sentinel node so it’s not surprising you can get pain.
Your breast care nurse is right. It’s better to take regular painkillers to keep the pain under control. If you take them sporadically it takes longer to get the pain killing effect.
Maybe try to take the painkillers regularly for a week and see how you get on.
Good luck
