I need to provide some background first, when i was first diagnosed my boss agreed to redeploy me as i cant work in my usual job whilst having chemo, this worked well until she had to go off as she too was diagnosed with breast cancer, just lately i have been working from home owing to the tiredness from chemo. This evening i received an email from her replacement stating that owing to the lack of option to do my job remotely he is demanding that i provide a sickness certificate for my absence from work. I wasn't aware I was absent and don't feel that i have been absent, it's not my fault that I can't work in my usual environment or that they are struggling to find me tasks I can do from home. This is just causing me more stress at a time when I really don't need it, I am finishing Chemo on the 17th November and have started having appointments with my surgeon to discuss next steps which are turning out to be different than what i was initially led to believe they would be. I should also point out that I am only entitled to 2 months full pay sick leave and 2 months half pay so was hoping to have to not use them until I had had surgery.
Apologies for the long rant but I don't know how to react to the email and the additional stress is just getting to me.
Was the arrangement with your previous boss informal? Are you part of a union?
To get the best advice I would recommend dropping into a Maggie's centre, I have used their advisers and so far, excellent. Not sure what Macmillan has to offer on something like this but it's worth looking into. I believe there is legislation in place to protect you but I am not familiar with the details and it sounds like you need expert advice on how to get your boss to make any "reasonable adjustments" as they should, rather than try and push you into a premature sick leave.

I spoke to the Macmillan helpline today regarding work. Basically as a patient with a cancer diagnosis you have the same rights against discrimination as any other disability and this is for life. Do you have a HR department you could talk to about this? Allowing you to work from home is reasonable adjustment. Good luck x
