Exercise after treatment

Hi everyone 

I hope you are all doing ok.

Well treatment is done and I feel I’d like to do some kind of exercise, possibly yoga, something calming.

I live in Braintree, Essex and wondered if anyone knows of any classes.

Following diagnosis and treatment I want to start thinking of myself a little more and putting myself first.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know

  • No local class suggestions but I was running before diagnosis and it felt amazing getting back to it after surgery. Exercise definitely helps my mental state, and is good for all things menopause now I have that to contend with too. i don't run far or fast but just knwing that getting my heart rate up and my bones strong makes me feel good.

    Yoga sounds like a great idea, there are lots of online classes these days that you dial in to so if you can't find anything local, you would have a lot of choice online

  • Yoga is a great exercise at any time but especially during and after cancer treatment. I’d recommend seeking out someone with cancer rehabilitation experience if you’re looking for local classes.

    There are some good online options. The Penny Brohn charity has  a Caring For Cancer yoga session - as well as loads of other online resources. Worth exploring everything they have available, you might find something else that appeals! Look under Support For You and Resources on their main menu;

    Vicky Fox also offers her Yoga For Cancer online on a Sunday morning (as well as her classes in studio in London which are also streamed for remote attendance). I’ve been doing the Sunday morning one throughout treatment and it’s excellent. There are some videos on her website if you want to take a look first.

  • Hi , great suggestions already, just wanted to add that I started Nordic walking on the advice of my lympheodema nurse and it’s become a much loved hobby. My local group wouldn’t be near you as I’m in Hertfordshire but there will be one near you I’m sure. We even had zoom classes during lockdown. There are still zoom classes run by the central organisation (WALX and NWUK), I’m doing a half hour session tomorrow morning. And I did a ‘real’ walk with my local group this morning in the autumn sunshine. It’s apparently very good for post breast surgery folk and it’s certainly been fantastic for me. I’ve met new people as well as found new walks. 

    I like the look of the WeCAN programme too and am going to investigate further.

  • I am planning to start Belly Dancing classes when they resume. They have not restarted yet after lockdown etc. I have a notion for a bellybutton piercing for a ruby. I think this is a hangover from seeing the Beetle's film A Hard Day's Night at about age 12yrs, which is where I am convinced the belly ruby idea came from [although I may be wrong]. My bargain with myself is that no dancing equals no ruby, so that will be the order of things.

    Also, ruby will have to wait until I am not immunosuppressed anymore. That gives me until April-ish to get to the dance class.

    I have lived quietly until now [aged mid-60s] so, this is really branching out for me. Ha ha ha! As others have said, onwards and upwards! It is essential to have things to look forward to.

    If challenged on this, I will blame chemo-brain.

  • What a fab idea! I’ve not seen anything like this near me but I might have to go looking now. 

  • Hi  I’ve been considering Nordic walking - think the thought originated from seeing you mention it in other posts! 

    I have a group local to me so will approach them. Were there any constraints on when you could start after your treatment? I’m 7 weeks post surgery and one week into 3 weeks of rads. 

  • Hi NBI (can’t tag you for some reason), I started Nordic walking much longer after my surgery and rads - I was 6-7 months post op and 3 months post rads. The timescale wasn’t to do with healing but just with getting the idea from the lympheodema nurse, then finding a group and starting. What about contacting your local group and asking their advice? You have to fill in medical forms pre booking which will pick up the surgery and rads. I’d definitely wait till you’ve finished your 3 weeks and then the further 2 weeks when it’s still ‘working’. I walked daily (my sanity saver!) but wouldn’t have been able to do the Nordic walking during that time as too much upper body stuff.  But I could have started sooner than I did if I’d known about it.  If you have a mid or post rads review you could also ask then? 

    Good luck with it and I’d love to hear if you start it! I’ve recruited 3 of my friends to my local group, I think I should be on commission! HFxx

  • Hi  Good that you are thinking of exercise after treatment. There is so much evidence now of the benefits of exercise during and after treatment and how it can impact the likelihood of reoccurrence. I think that any form of exercise is beneficial - just do something that you like and enjoy and do it as and when you can
