Can someone have filling before they start their radiotherapy ? Or would any problems arise

  • Hi Daisy

You should be able to have a filling before radiotherapy. Shouln't be any different than normal. Tell the dentist about the BC diagnosis and whatever treatment has been had up till now when they are taking the medical history update.

    All the best

  • Hi

i had 2 fillings during the time I was having radiotherapy as I needed to have any dental work completed before commencing with Zoledronic acid which I will have every 6 months for 3 years.

please remember to advise your dentist of the treatment you are on, etc.

    good luck x

  • Thank you so much

  • Thank you really appreciate

  • I always attended dental checkups and hygienist every three months. Had a full check before starting my treatment and now lo and behold have got a problem with a front tooth root canal  treated about 10 years ago which I fear has now failed. Like Baileylady on Zoledronic for 3 years and have already had one infusion. Can’t get any info from  anyone and am in pain.
Has anyone had dental work whilst on Zoledronic as surely one can’t suffer pain for 3 years. Tired face

  • Aw bless you. Are you able to check with your oncologist? 3 years seem a long time

  • Hi LizJon

Yes, you can get work done while on Zoledronic acid. Speak to your own dental practitioner first and if he/she is not comfortable to do whatever you are needing done since you have started on ZA, ask to be referred to a Special Care Dentist. The issue with ZA and some dental treatments persists for life after ZA. It is not just of the 3yrs that you must tell the dentist.

I am in Scotland, I am not sure which part of the country you are in, however there should be dental care provision for people with more complicated dental care needs than are usual. Your medical GP could also refer you if you need this, I think. Here it would be the Public Dental Service which takes referrals for those with Special Care needs.

    Good luck getting dental care.

  • I should have said that it is extra important for us to have check-ups, preventive and restorative dental care.

It is extraction of teeth, infections of the jaw bones and surgery to these bones which can cause the problems for us. So we really want to be doing everything to be avoiding these things if we can.

I got high Fluoride toothpaste from my dentist for this reason. It is prescription only, so we cant just buy it. It gives extra protection from decay and erosion, especially when we might have 'dry mouth' or gastric reflux which can cause problems with teeth, even for those who have not had dental problems before.
