Hi folks. 1st chemo on 5th August. No issues for 6 days then wham. Got a razorblade throat and temperature. Ended up in hospital with an infection and neutrophenia. (I think that's what it's called). Blood were at 0.8 but eventually got them to 4.6 so got out today. My issue now is this.... everything i put in my mouth gives me a burning sensation. I have the start of mouth ulcers, but they're very much under skin of lips at moment and my tongue is all cracked. I have been given a mouth wash from docs and adult bonjela. (Didn't even know such a thing existed). Also 6 did of oral antibiotics. Again the problem is every time I use toothpaste/mouthwash it hurts my mouth. Its like its on fire. I put bonjela on tonight for the first time and just about went through the roof with the pain. Had to run to kitchen for water it was that burning. Hubby didn't realise just how bad it was until he saw me crying. It's not something I do in general. Has anyone had this and what did you do about it. I can't even eat jelly babies as they sting my mouth. As does alcohol, chocolate, raisins, orange juice/ pineapple juice Even tunnocks teacakes hurt. Last week I was so positive about this journey, now I'm worried about putting anything in my mouth at all as its so sore and I haven't even got a proper ulcer yet. ADVICE GREATLY RECIEVED.
I’m so sorry for you. This exact same thing happened with my sister first round chemo but for Hodgkin’s, the neutropenia and the mouth pain, I think the 2 maybe connected, it’s incredible how chemo can vary so much from person to person. It sounds like your gp has prescribed stuff, has he given you difflam? He can also prescribe another oral cream, I can’t remember the name I’m sorry. Other advice and so sorry if you’ve tried it already, don’t use any mouthwash with alcohol in it, buy a child’s toothbrush with soft bristles and child’s toothpaste, brush sparingly, gargle with salt water, don’t drink anything acidic like orange juice or pineapple juice at all, don’t drink alcohol or smoke at all, sorry just makes it worse, it did get better over time but it is horrible and I’m really sorry for you x
Thank you so much for replying. The bonjela is helping a bit, but it sounds like mad when I first apply it. I'm sitting in front of a fan when I put it on so it child mouth pretty quickly. I've been trying pineapple juice as I read it was good for preventing this kind of thing. I just couldn't understand why all the stuff the docs gave me caused so much pain. To top it off I had very long night in hospital. They decided to wake me up at 5 am to move me to a totally different ward and I didn't get back to sleep. Amazing how fragile lack of sleep causes you. X
It really does affect you badly and being in hospital means you get zero sleep, I feel bad complaining to you but I’ve been having really broken nights, had a UTI and wasn’t getting more than 2 hours, really drains you. Plus the chemo seems to have given me insomnia at the best of times! Pineapple juice can be great for that metallic taste too but once you actually have mouth inflammation or ulcers it just makes it worse. I’d avoid anything acidic at all or spicy or sharp! The fan sounds like a good idea LOL! Also try really bland things like porridge, scrambled eggs, chicken soup, moisten food with gravy or sauces if you can face it. Hopefully now you’re home you can rest and your body will start to heal x
I had a sore mouth after my last round of chemo, not as bad as yours by the sounds of it, but I found the difflam mouthwash didn’t do much for me, then I tried corsodyl and it felt so much better even a few hours afterwards. It does sting like hell though!
hope it gets better soon x
