I have been prescribed anastrozole following chemo and surgery. I thought I should have a bone density scan as anastrozole can damage your bones. My oncologist and BCN have both said that because I am also having ibandronic acid, I don't need a scan. Has anyone else not had a bone scan in these circumstances?
Thank you in advance,
Julie x
Hi, I am having zoledronic acid every 6 months for 3 years, assume it's a similar treatment. I asked my oncologist if I should have a bone scan to see how my bones are now and he said there is no point as the zoledronic acid is already treating any issues with bone loss. They give it as standard now I think with AIs (that I am taking) to prevent issues.
Look on the royal osteoporosis society guidance for breast cancer treatment and bone loss.
it’s recommended you have a baseline (which you have missed as you’ve started bisphosphonate treatment - unless you’ve only just started - it states within 3 months of starting) then depending on your bone density at baseline there’s an algorithm.
for standard osteoporosis when people are on bisphosphonates they don’t get scanned until they’ve finished their course of treatment or unless they fracture within that time.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
