Hi

I’ve had my second cycle of chemo and tried the cold cap first time, quit half way through the second time. Just couldn’t cope with the headache. Anyway, my hair is really thick and has been coming out loads and now it’s matting. Do I just shave it off or keep brushing it out? Any suggestions appreciated.

  • I cut mine off and donated it ahead of chemo then had a buzz cut. I felt much more in control that way and had a chance to get used to the super short hair before it fell out. I didn't find it at all traumatic when it did fall out. I finished chemo in January and now have a thick head of hair about an inch or so and it is beautifully soft and a lovely colour. I think some people can find it painful when it comes out and I didn't experience this so not sure if the shaving helped with that too.

I think shaving it off might help when it comes out. I think it would be hard to have patchy longer hair whereas you barely notice the patches when your hair has been shaved.

  • I shaved mine off week 5 of my chemo as it start to matt I never had thick hair but I to couldn't bring myself to cold cap either I had my last weekly chemo today and over the past 2 weeks my hair has started to sprout I still have a couple of bald buts but I did feel so much better for shaving it off I have become obsessed with scalves and caps now also my hair was getting really sore to and once it all came off the soreness went hope this helps xxx

  • Thankyou. That’s a great help. I think I’m gonna bite the bullet and shave it off. I know it’s just hair but it still feels sad x
