I had a mastectomy and immediate reconstruction using flaps 5 months ago. The scar is healing but the underarm and a large part of the breast is still numb. The breast looks very flat and is lumpy at the side.
The consultant said she thought it looked good and was healing well. I thought it would not look so bad and take so long.
Would like to hear from anyone else who has had this done
Hi @Cwy
I can't help with your query, but as your post has slipped to the second page, I'm just bumping it back to the first page in the hope that another lady / ladies are around now that can help out with some information and advice.
Best wishes, Lesley
Hi I did not need radiotherapy as they had taken the breast completely out. Must say that I thought it would be healing quicker than it is. Have a telephone follow up with the breast cancer nurse next month so let's see what they say. I was told that as I had reconstruction I would not need radiotherapy. Good luck xx
Hi Cwy I had a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I went down the route of expanders then a second reconstruction surgery with implants. I’m yet to have the implant. I did this because I needed 15 sessions of radiotherapy and it can distort the implant. The radiation has completely changed the shape and colour of my breast even months after my treatment stopped.
i too have been slightly disappointed, I don’t know what I was expecting but it was not what I got. I get a lot of pain as well and mine is still settling according to my breast nurse. I had it done in August 2020. I have never got feeling back in my breast and I don’t think I will.
I tried a swimsuit on the other week and if you didn’t know, it just looked like a normal breast which has really helped with my confidence. I don’t particularly love my new breast and it is taking some adapting but It does get better.
Thank you for sharing i have my appointment with my plastic surgeon in a week xx
Hi Sam I was told that I could have flaps for the reconstruction, implants were never mentioned. So they took out the breast then took flesh from the abdomen and the back and put that into the breast. So my right breast looks flat and lumpy at the side which according to the surgeon is the flat.
Maybe in time it will improve but although they showed me pictures it does not look how I thought it would. I just stick to wearing padded crop tops and in time a padded bra. By the end of the day it becomes painful but seems we just have to live with it xx
