Joint pain - after 1 year?

Hi

I started taking Anastrozole a year ago following a mastectomy. I have just started with joint pain in my left hand and wrist on the same side as the mastectomy. Can the side effects of Anastrozole start after a year? Seems a bit strange. I wonder whether it could be a side effect of the AstraZeneca vaccine? Anyone else experienced this? The thought also crossed my mind that I may be starting with arthritis? Anyone else experienced this?

thanks

    Hi

Sorry to hear you're having joint pains.  My first thought, when I read your post, was to wonder if you'd had a different brand recently?  It seems the fillers in the tablets can make a difference to some.  Is there any way you can find out which brand/s you have up until recently?  Maybe your Pharmacy will have some record of what they've had sent to them

If you can work out what brand/s you've had previously, note what brand you are currently taking and check you don't get that brand again, while you try alternative brands.

To try alternative brands, you may have to order the prescription at a separate time that any other meds you order, so that the prescription is on it's own sheet of paper.  You can then take to which ever pharmacy has your required brand in stock.  A bit of a trail around, or you could phone them, but would be worth it in the end, of course, if you can escape this pain.

Wishing you the best of luck

  • Hi Choc Drop

thanks for the reply. I haven’t changed brands lately though so will bear this in mind when I do*. I’ve read that some women can react badly to different brands. I seem to be retaining a lot of fluid at the moment and perhaps it has something to do with that.

    * I’ve just received a different brand that I start in about a week. Hope it doesn’t trigger a reaction Fingers crossed

  • Sorry you're feeling pain. I can't comment on Anastrozole because I don't have experience of it. But I can tell you about my experience with the AZ vaccine. It's taken me 6 weeks to recover from the first jab. I've had a big increase in joint pain, fatigue, weakness and generally feeling really unwell, since having it. 6 weeks on and I'm almost back to my baseline energy and pain levels. I do have a chronic health condition which is likely to be the reason my body reacted to the vaccine in this way. (I had a similar but longer-term relapse from a flu jab a few years ago).  But I thought I would mention my experience here because you may well have had an unfortunate response to the jab too. Hope you feel better soon.

  • Hi

i have had chemo which I finished at the end of January but I am continuing with 3 weekly pertuzamab and trastuzumab. I still suffer sore legs, feet and hips and some days walk like I am 20 years older. I thought it was because of the chemo but must be the P&T.

but I had my Astra Zeneca 11 weeks ago and I had to have it in my leg in my thigh muscle.  Some nights I really struggle to sleep because of my aches and pains but I have noticed over the last month or two that I am suffering a lot of pain in my thigh.  It was just last night that I clicked and realised that the pain is in the thigh is where I had the needle!  And I do not have any pain in my other leg thigh muscle! so that pain must be down to the vaccine.  I messaged my doctor today and the reply I got back was really unhelpful!  they said that there is often pain in the muscle where the injection site is but gave no indication of how long it goes on for! No help whatsoever!

i am having my 1st zoledronic acid treatment tomorrow and I am due to start my Anastrozole in the next few days so looking forward to more pain Joy  it is not an easy ride that we are all on!

take care and I really hope your pain eases x

  • Hi MoominAncestor

thanks for your reply. The AZ jab did have an effect on my joints and muscle aches but only lasted about 3 days. My brother was badly affected and found it hard to get out of bed. 6 weeks is a long time. Have you recorded it on the Yellow Card service online? If not it may be worthwhile. Despite your chronic condition it’s worth pointing out side effects of the vaccines. It’s easy to Google. I think there’s probably a lot to learn about the side effects to the covid vaccines. I hope you stay safe and if your symptoms continue I would speak to your GP again.

  • Hi Baileylady

thanks for your reply. As I mentioned to Moonancestor, even if the Gp isn’t helpful it’s a good idea to complete the Yellow Card service on line to log your side effects. My joint pain seems to move from joints in my wrist to fingers and now my other hand has started to hurt occasionally. I will go see the GP if this continues. I don’t think it’s connected to the jab because it originated in the opposite arm to the injection. I wonder whether some of these symptoms are an immune response to the vaccine? I’m sure a more detailed knowledge will emerge eventually!

    best wishes

I totally agree with you,   The Gvmt only tell us what they want us to know and only time will tell regarding side effects / longer term effects

I have had both vaccinations, Phizer, and have had no reactions at all for either of them.  I've heard very little regarding side effects of the Phizer vaccine yet several of my friends have felt ill / flu-like after both vaccinations

Certainly, I feel Yellow card should be submitted to the company, and Gvmt, get the feedback. I believe some countries have stopped using AZ because of effects

I hope you all feel better before too long.  Horrible not feeling well, especially when dealing with cancer too
