Hi I am awaiting a breast mri. Yesterday was advised I am stage 1 grade 2 hormone positive, still awaiting her.  Could not be given a proper sizing, but having an mri so can be sized properly and they can get a more detailed picture of my breast.  Advised its small by consultant on two mammograms and advised about 1cm, lump cannot be felt.  Just nervous at what mri will show and my final size. Any advice please

From my experience, you are in the most difficult stage. The waiting! I felt a lump on 1 April and had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy on 11 May. It came back as stage 2 grade 3 double hormone positive and HER negative. I suspect they will also send your tumour for q HER 2 result as this gives then a clearer picture of how to treat the cancer. I am also currently awaiting my oncotype result. It is so tough to wait and I find the nights the hardest! But it seems that you picked this up really early and therefore the outlook and prognosis will possibly be very good! Good luck on this journey

  • Yh I am awaiting my Her, nothing showed on my ultrasound  I had a vacuum biopsy guided by my mammogram, he advised its small. My mind working over drive. Scan on my lymph nodes was clear xx

If the HER comes back negative, they might request an oncotype which is another 2 weeks wait. It is always good if there is no lymph node involvement! Stage 1 is a tumour up to 2 cm, stage 2 is 2 to 5 cm. Obviously stage 1 is much more positive but stage 2 still very treatable. You might have a limpectomy to remove it as well as sentinel node biopsy just to check the lymph nodes as well. Possibly radiotherapy as well. You caught this early and that is always very positive. It is tough though. That is why I am still awake! The mind just cannot switch off.

  • Your right your mind cannot switch off.  What was the result off your lymph nodes from when they took your sentinel biopsy.  Did anything show on your ultrasound pls xx

Nothing showed up on mammogram, ultrasound or my biopsy on the nodes. They removed 3 nodes to check and all was clear. If it is a stage 1 tumour it is very unlikely that you will have any lumpj node involvement. That is usually only from stage 2, when the tumour has grown even more.

  • Thank you, was your tumour picked up on your mammogram, did it show on tour your ultrasound. I had a vacuum biopsy to diagnose mine, what did you have pls xx

No, I actually felt mine as it was quite big. I was lying down and felt a bit of pain so when I felt my breast I could feel the lump. It was quite deep, at the bottom of my left breasg. Turned out to be 30 mm big. I had a core needle biopsy initially but was wrongly diagnosed with DCIS non invasive stage 0 so it was a shock when I got my final diagnosis after the lumpectomy

  • Thank you, with what has been said to myself then, its small, I cannot feel it, for some reason it did not show on ultrasound, and they have advised surgery first, lymph node scan fine, would you be taking this as positive.  I do think I am in shock still.  Was your lymph nodes okay xx

Very very positive indeed. It is probably very small if you cannot feel it. They say that you can only start to feel it when it gets to pea size. Obviously it depends on where it is. Another positive is that they advise surgery first. If they were very worried, you would start with chemo and then surgery. For stage 0 and stage 1, the recovery is 100%! It is brilliant news. You need to now have the surgery done and that will give them more detailed information on the tumour. It will be fine and you will be fine. It is hard to deal with but it gets better once you know what they are going to do. Do you have a cancer support worker to talk to?

Re surgery, if your lumo is that small, it will be a small incision too. I hardly had any pain. It is morecsensitive and uncomfortable but really not a lot of pain. You manage that will pain killers. I read uo a lot on cancers and getting all that info helped me to deal with it more positively. Cancerresearch uk also has some brilliant info
