Has anyone claimed pip after a breast cancer diagnosis ???

  • Hi

The only people I know who have successfully claimed PIp are people with secondary breast cancer, I don’t know anyone who has had it for primary - that doesn’t mean there aren’t any ? Have you contacted the Macmillan helpline for advice?

  • No   I saw someone else had claimed so just wondered   I think you have to be very disabled and very ill to claim it

  • I know you have to be ill for 3 months before being able to claim but I am not an expert, if you feel you may qualify you really should try and claim ? The Macmillan helpline has lots of good reviews, they also have a hardship fund of sorts - even if you don’t qualify for PiP you may qualify for other benefits ?

  • PIP eligibility is supposedly based on the daily tasks and aspects of mobility  that  you are impaired in, not on the diagnosis. "Supposedly". I've been through the assessment system several times and am in receipt of PIP for some chronic health conditions, not for cancer (yet). PIP is one disability based benefit you can apply for whether you are in employment or not. A Blue Badge can be applied for from the council if you have difficulty walking for any health reason,  you don't have to be a driver. The badge is for you in whomever's vehicle. It's not exactly a benefit but it can make life easier.  ESA or Universal Credit is another possible benefit if your health has impacted your ability to work or your employer's sickness benefit has expired. Often being accepted for one of these benefits can become the evidence that proves eligibility for another benefit.  Remember it's not usually the diagnosis that qualifies you, it's your level and duration of impairment.

And then there are various income based benefits which you might qualify for if your cancer / treatments/ long term surgery side effects etc have impacted your earning ability. Oh, and free prescriptions. I'll find a link to the Martin Lewis Benefits Calculator, it's a handy place to start finding out what you might be entitled to across the spectrum of benefits, not just disability related ones. Good luck.

  • I am not eligible gor esa or job seekers or universal credit as my husband works. It is laughable really because if my husband didn’t support me who would. I am 62 so got to wait another four years gor my pension   Maybe should turn to drugs or alcohol and I would get pip   I have other health problems as well   I was a carer for 32 years looking after my severely disabled mother  I was in receipt of carers allowance but when she past away I wasn’t even eligible for job seekers allowance  there are thousands of women just like me xx
