Hi All,

I have been on chemo for 5 cycles and this Friday is my last one. I was diagnosed with TNBC in Jan so surgery will be next. I have noticed weight gain since startimg chemo. I have never been over weight and have maintained the same weight for more than 20 years. Eating healthy and being active. Just wondered if anyone else has had this issue and if it goes back to normal after ending chemo. Thanks

  • Are you sure it's weight and not water? I started retaining water from my 2nd docetaxel cycle. I gained a few kilos from it ans I know it wasn't actual weight gain as I wasn't eating enough. I'm 4 months post-chemo and I still have puffy hands and feet and haven't shifted the water yet but it is slowly getting better.

  • Hi

i think you do gain or hold on to some weight during chemo.  I had 7 three weekly cycles and definitely didn’t over eat due to changes in tastes etc. For the first time in years and years I wasn’t on a diet and I did eat sweet things that I wouldn’t normally eat, but didn’t worry about it as there was some days I couldn’t face proper food. So basically I ate as healthy as I could but had a treat whenever I wanted it.

but sometimes during the cycles I was so bloated, especially during the last few cycles of docetaxel. So I think a lot of it was water weight. I didn’t actually go up in weight but was a lot bigger especially around my middle.

in the 3 months following chemo I dropped around 5 pounds without trying! So I ended up losing some of my lockdown weight that I had put on prior to my cancer and treatments. I was eating better, still having the odd sweet treat and a few drinks here and there, and yet I lost that weight so my guess is that maybe I had already lost body weight but didn’t lose on the scales as this was water weight!

also don’t forget the steroids we have to take to prevent sickness will not help either.
try not to worry too much, eat healthy where you can but be kind to yourself allow yourself some treats.  Remember you are fighting a battle and deserve a treat here and there and when you have won the war you can sort yourself out again, if it doesn’t all drop off anyway!

    take care and good luck!

  • Thank you very much, you take care too xx

  • Thanks, I havent got swallon foot or hands but I am sure lots of it is water retention. You take care xx

Hello I was going to ask the same question myself as I’m TN and halfway through chemo.
I’ve noticed the weight creeping on slowly week by week and I’m trying to eat healthy.
As a slimming world member my weight is important to me. But then so is getting better, so I do try to ignore it.
does anyone else suffer with weight gain?
    Stay strong x

  • Yes I steadily put on weight during chemo annoyingly, it’s quite common in BC patients I’m sorry to say x

  • Wait until you ladies start letrozole lol!
