I am having a biopsy for a faint image found on a mammogram which is non palpable what questions should I be asking please, what could it be x

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum, albeit, I'm sure you'd much rather not be here!

At this stage, there really isn't any questions that you could ask that they can answer - until the biopsy is carried out, then they in all honesty won't be able to tell you too much.  They don't like to guess too much (despite having ideas based on experience) because if they get the guess wrong it could elate/devastate the recipient of news - far better to give accurate information, I'm sure you'll agree.

As it's non palpable, it's hopeful that it's not an invasive cancer - or be so small that it can't be felt. (cancerous cells usually form a lump).  It could be DCIS, which for want of a better description,  is pre cancerous cells.  Therefore if it's DCIS it is staged as stage 0 - non life threatening - although the treatment can be much the same as if it were invasive cancer.  For example, I had 15mm cancer and 54mm of DCIS - the treatment for both was removal (lumpectomy or wide local excision as they now call it) and radiotherapy.  My cancer didn't need chemo. and often DCIS doesn't get treated with chemo. as well - so a much easier treatment plan.

Alternatively, it could be just odd breast tissue!  So, at this stage it's just a case of hanging on in there and wait for the results of your biopsy.  As soon as they know something, they will let you know and are very practiced at what they are doing, given that breast cancer is the most prevalent form of  cancer.

Good luck with the biopsy and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes, Lesley

  • Hi @Shaz52 - replied on your other one too Slight smile

I'm guessing you can get it anywhere in your breast.  Mine was a bit odd as I presumed that my cancer had formed from my DCIS, but I actually had 2 different types when I got my pathology results.!  One type of cancer and then a completely different type of the 2 areas of DCIS.

In a way, I was quite pleased that I didn't know too much at the start - I went for the biopsies on my own as it was my first mammo. and just thought they didn't know my breasts.  I then just ignored it (buried my head in the sand) until I saw the oncologist who confirmed what I'd already realised, that I had cancer.

When we hear the word cancer, we always assume the worst, but I promise you it's never as bad as you fear.  I look back now and 100% know that the fear was loads worse than the actual treatment etc.

    Good luck on Tuesday.
