Hi everyone!
I start my chemo treatment soon and I’m going to try the cold cap but I know it may not work. My issue is I have a 4 and 6 year old and don’t want to freak them out going from long hair to no hair. Any advice on how I approach this situation would be appreciated. I was thinking of having it cut in a Bob in next couple of days and get a similar wig. I’m just concerned for them really.
hope to hear from someone

Boxie83 i think having a Bob cut is a fab idea I didn't go for cold capping myself but I think it's worth giving it a go as it may just work for you my lovely. a few ladies at my unit have kept most of their hair it's just thinned out alot and a wig similar to your own style will be a good call. have a word with your BC nurse as you can get one from free from the NHS I have one they are beautifully made now they come in all colours and styles worth an ask you get it within 2 weeks and they come with wig shampoo conditioner and finishing spray hope this helps wishing you the best of luck and love with your chemotherapy keep us updated with it all love Belinda xx
Hi Boxie I'm in a similar situation having 6 year old twins. I'm a single mum so hoping I can get through this. I can cope with most things but just want to protect my childen from this..... xx
Exactly, this is what I worry about. Have you said anything to your children? X
Not yet. Just know mummy had a lump taken out of her boob and I'll need more medicine over the summer. No idea what to tell him. And hoping amongst all hope we can still go away in August! Got a week in isle of wight booked... not seen oncologist yet for date so no idea of timescales but they will be devastated if miss their holiday:-(
Hi Boxie83
This page on BreastcancerNow https://breastcancernow.org/information-support/facing-breast-cancer/talking-children-about-breast-cancer has a lot of tips for speaking to children about breast cancer, and also a link to a booklet they produce called “Mummy’s lump”
My children were teenagers when I was diagnosed so I wasn’t in the same situation as you, but my hair was really long and my youngest son was really upset about my hair. I had mine cut short and then shaved when it started to fall out. At home I didn’t wear anything on my head, but wore a wig outside and at work, mainly because I didn’t always want to have conversations about my hair/cancer etc. There are some really pretty scarves and bamboo turban type hats to wear if a wig isn’t for you, perhaps you can ask your children to help pick some out for you?
You also need to factor in what you do when your hair starts to come back, if you have a long wig do you wear it for over a year until your own hair matches the wig?
