Hi

Last year I was diagnosed with grade 2/3 breast cancer. I started chemotherapy straight away, having it every week for 3 months and then every 3 weeks.
four weeks ago I had 23 lymph nodes removed and had a lumpectomy and have recovered well but still suffering with numbness and breast being painful.
I’ll be starting radiotherapy in four weeks and really don’t know what to expect. I’ll be going every day for 3 weeks.
has anyone else been through a similar journey to me and can offer me some advice please!

  • Hi

Your treatment sounds very similar to mine. After chemo and surgery I found radiotherapy quite straightforward. The tiring bit was the journey every day for three weeks. Remember too that the effects of radiotherapy continue for weeks/ months afterwards so keep up the arm and shoulder exercises.
The treatment itself only takes minutes and there is no discomfort. Initially you have a longer appointment so that everything is accurately measured. Then on your return visits the radioographers ensure you are lying in the exact same position so treatment is effective. A lot of people worry as many have skin reactions . I was lucky and did not have a reaction to treatment. At my unit they gave you recommended cream to use when necessary.

I suggest you go to the Diagnosis and Treatment part in the breast care forum and there you will find those going through treatment at the same time where they share treatment experiences and help and support from each other. Think it’s titled May 21 breast cancer radiotherapy .

    All the best
