Hi all, what are your experiences of taking Tamoxifen? My oncologist has suggested I take it. I have had a lumpectomy and am due to soon start radiotherapy. The doctor said there is a low chance the cancer will return (about 6%) as it was caught early etc. I am concerned about the possible side effects of the drug as the risk is only reduced by 2%. What are your thoughts and experiences? Thanks
Hi Lynn.h welcome to the forum. Ah the million dollar questions "should I take Tamoxifen".
You are the one and only person with those statistics that can make that choice and I'm not meaning to be difficult in saying that.
As far as I know the drugs are prescribed to minimise the chance of recurrence for us, but all people are not always able to tolerate these drugs and for lots of different reasons, decide to not take them. However, should there be a recurrence and they have not taken the drug will they be left wondering about what if? As I said Im not trying to be challenging or difficult, but raising things that they do need to think about before making the choice and whichever one they take has to be right for them and only them.
Thanks, I received a leaflet today with all the possible side effects on it. It is a difficult choice to make.
Hi Lynn, I've been taking Tamoxifen for 15 months now and have no issues at all. I'm 49, finished my immunotherapy treatment in October 20, so now Tamoxifen is all I do! Obviously everyone is different but I can say it is possible to have the benefits of taking it and not notice any side effects.

Hi I've been on it for a year with similar circumstances to you. Early detection and I had surgery and radiotherapy last year. The medications been good for me. No side effects. If it reduces your risk its better to reduce than risk it. Try it and see how you get on. If you don't like it you've tried. Good luck
Hi, I’ve swapped from Letrozole to Tamoxifen as I’d already had osteoporosis prior to bc, so my surgeon and team felt as I’d done over 2 1/2 years they felt I was low risk so could swap for the sake of my bones. Yes I get hot flushes and to begin with they were a bit more intense, but have settled again. My ankles are a bit achey first thing in the morning but those 2 side effects are a VERY small price to pay for being safer, in my opinion!

Thanks. It's all a bit difficult to get your head round. Mine was picked up from a routine mammogram. It was too small to feel and not in my lymph nodes. One minute you have no idea anything is wrong and then this happens. The surgeon said its all gone and they don't expect it to be a further problem but then on the other hand I'm being told to take meds for the next 5 years.
Yes I was very similar, low risk as it was all removed at the op. Just have to do 2 more years now, it’s gone very fast really.

I still have hot flushes and achey ankles but I ache less than with Letrozole.
