Hi I am having a mastectomy in a couple of weeks, can anyone offer any advice on what to take to wear home after the op, I will have a drain?  I have looked at drain camisoles but they are around £60...  Thank you x

  • Hi  The right choice of your post surgery bra/support will be critical to supporting your healing. A friend of mine highly recommended Z bra which is what she used after mastectomy and reconstruction surgery, but they’re also pricey. If budget is a challenge I would strongly suggest contacting Macmillan and seeking advice on what support you might be able to receive, either from them or a cancer support centre in your area. Remember, this is about doing the best for you and one small step towards being kind to yourself. Hope all goes well with your surgery and recovery. Take care x

  • Hi

My story is on my profile just click on my name to read if you want .

welcome to the community that nobody really wants to join but are very grateful to have found .

I had a right side mastectomy no reconstruction  in July 2019 .so I can only discuss my experience without reconstruction

I was in hospital fir five nights ,not because I was ill but hubby not able to support and hospital had free beds so three mastectomy patients had our own little unit and formed quite a club RoflJoy the drain was removed before discharge .

So no bra was worn while drain was in ,there was no adverse effect .

On leaving hospital I wore a m& s post surgery bra with an NHS softie on flat side . A lot of ladies on here recommend Asda post surgery front fastening sports type bra ..very reasonable price . No good for me as I'm large cup .

With regards other nightwear / clothing go for button thru for ease of movement . Also baggy tops work well for movement with drain .

At my hospital we were given a drain size shoulder bag so we could move around also a heart shape cushion to fit underarm for comfort when sitting they were made by Macmillan volunteers.

The bag was an oblong of material with a long strap very easy to make have a look online for them .

Hope this helps feel free to ask any questions you may have someone will answer .

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

Thank you Margaret for your reply & advice Two hearts

I am having right side mastectomy too & no re construction currently..

Already have the drain bag & cushion from the Macmillan team.

I am just going in as a day case for the op, ordered a couple of M&S post op bras but will probably just go free with a baggy front opening top to come home.

    Take care xx
